What type of skier are you? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? How can you improve your skills and your downhill experience? Total Skiing was developed specifically to help you answer those questions. Author and renowned ski instructor Chris Fellows shares his proven pyramid program for assessing skills and creating your skiing profile. Step by step, you’ll identify exercises to enhance those skills and create a personal training program to improve functional movement, including stability and mobility, ski-specific fitness, essential ski techniques, and tactics for performance on all terrains. Total Skiing also includes sample programs for each skier type that offers guidance from preseason to postseason with dry-land and on-snow drills for foundational, intermediate, and advanced performance solutions. Whether you are looking to polish your skills, conquer the new terrain, or compete on circuit, Total Skiing is your total guide to exhilarating all-mountain skiing!
This is the sort of book one needs to/ could easily return to (every autumn for example) to assess current ability and plan ahead.
Total skiing is an apt title and Chris Fellows really wants you to address all aspects of your physical ability to improve your skiing, from functional movement to fitness. A large part of this book is dedicated to helping you identify your current 'level' of physical ability and explains how to improve on it.
As such there is perhaps not enough technical dissection of ski technique for those who are looking for that sort of thing. There is plenty of that on the internet anyway.
This is not necessarily a bad thing. You will still need a trained eye to identify the "gap" between what you think you are doing and what you are actually doing to really improve, so no book will ever replace the occasional lesson.
Chris Fellows is not only an amazing coach and instructor but he is also a talented author. I had an opportunity to both ski with Chris and listen to his advice, and guidance, that worked almost instantly, and also read his book. I’m also one of the students he mentioned in his book, who can say after skiing with Chris, that “this is one of the best skiing days" and experiences I had on skis in a long time. If you want to extend the feeling of that perfect ski day, take some après-ski time to read Chris' book. This book will take you well beyond what you can take from one day of skiing, to the levels of true ski professionals, and even if skiing is your hobby, you will learn a lot from this well-written, concise, well-structured and entertaining book. I saw visual improvements with students taught by Chris, during only one day, and Ill be getting back to his book to learn more!
I liked the assessment process to individualize improvement focus.
I accepted the repetitious nature of the later chapters as I think the book is setup to be reread, restudied, with skipping in later chapters to that which applies to the individual.
I especially liked the exercises demonstrated. Would love on line videos being integrated in future ebook formats.
NASTIC 3 day course in Tahoe was an excellent experience. Bravo Chris!
