Why has comprehension instruction become so complex? Sharon Taberski cuts through the pressurized, strategy-overloaded, fluency-crazed atmosphere surrounding reading instruction to lay out the reading and writing workshop practices that are most effective in developing readers in the primary grades. She shares the daily how-tos needed to sustain a literacy block that engages children in authentic reading and writing practices including dozens of effective practices that illustrate amazing ways to organize instructional and independent reading for kids Two Options for dynamic DVD-based staff
Great read for primary teachers! She gives book suggestions to get the right book into the right hands and lays out many procedures that really work! My class loved the Words, Words, Words activity in which certain words are highlighted for the class and when the class finds them in their independent reading they share them with the class and tally next to the word (that is on a sentence strip). I love her simplistic approach to reading which matches Richard Allington's advice to help struggling readers...GET BOOKS THAT THEY CAN READ INTO THEIR HANDS AND GIVE THEM TIME TO READ. This isn't rocket science but this simple act is often overshadowed by expensive and ineffective high-priced programs. Why? Is it a hidden agenda? My agenda and my prayer is that my students become lifelong readers (learners)!
This is one of my two favorite books for comprehension. I have utilized many, many ideas that I feel have improved my students' comprehension. I particularly found the Editing Checklist brilliant for writing. I have modified it for my own students, but the standardized test results don't lie. They can edit well! Great book!
Very practical, chock-full of ideas, but I don't agree with her method of divvying up comprehension strategies among the grade levels that she discusses at the end. I can overlook this, however, because of her great ideas in the rest of the book, particularly 1CIt 19s better to do fewer things well than many things superficially 1D and 1CBalanced Literacy is a menu, not a checklist 1D.
Although for teachers of grades K-3, there are great strategies one can apply to all elementary grades. She meshes the Teacher's College RW and WW approach with others well. Worthwhile reading!
Easy to read with lots of real life examples and manageable ideas. This is exactly what I was looking for and gets me super excited about a new school year teaching reading and writing!
