The introduction makes it clear: Dance to the music and how the music makes you feel! The movement patterns that are defined then, almost in contradiction, are spelled out - with varying degrees of success & accuracy - to how they might occur on the social dance floor.

This book offers an interesting viewpoint of dance and its performance. This is but one volume of an encyclopedia. It felt to me like most cross-references are contained in this volume. I was initially unaware and remain unsure why the glossary (sec. 7) is separate from the main content of this volume (sec. 6). If you have a formal partner dancing background, then peek at the glossary first to save some time flipping pages.
