Meg is gifted in her abilities to recognize and decipher codes. While working undercover at a software engineering firm, Meg manages to break through a series of passwords and retrieve a set of codes that might affect national security. Unknowingly, she has set in motion a series of events that sends her running for her life and must also discover whom she can trust.
I was sort of enjoying the self-conscious ‘90s tech references (“she used the mouse to drag the file to the trash icon”) but then it turned into a romance (“she studied his profile. He was better-looking than it seemed at first.”)
Katherine Myers quickly pulls you into the life of Meg Parris, a brilliant cryptographer but emotionally stunted woman. Suddenly, you find yourself wanting to know all about Meg and what will happen to her. Meg finds herself on the run with a private investigator, Ross, after she takes a series of codes during her undercover work as a CSS agent. Meg grapples with her fears and the possibilities of life she’s long ignored due to those fears. Meg and Ross discover not only a common connection with a group of youngsters with strange abilities who could be the answers to Meg’s mental demons but each other. Myers deftly takes you on an exciting journey across three states and through Meg’s internal struggles. It’s a trip well worth taking - one that once you’ve started will keep you hooked until the end.
Great balance of clean romance, character development, suspense and fantasy that is believable. I really enjoyed this book for multiple reasons. Love the smart and beautiful main female character who is unaware of her beauty. Also the secrecy of her job. A great experience. Would have given it a 5 star if I didn't figure out the ending half way through, but still had to prove that I guessed right.
Slightly science-fiction but good story of a young woman who is good at breaking codes so is hired by a branch of the government. On her first undercover job while looking for a certain code in a computer she pulls out the wrong info and her life in now in danger. Deals with the concept that things can be good or bad depending on how they are used.
This is a book that the excitement ramps up as you read the book. It is a road trip sort of book with the bad guys in hot pursuit. Join that with "Heroes" and you get an idea of what's in store. Great fun.
