Overall, this book served it’s purpose which was to introduce me to philosophy in preparation for reading some of Colin Wilson’s books. I have read a few ‘For Dummies’ books before so I am familiar with their style.
This particular book, I thought, was slightly more formal or academic sounding where as usually these ‘For Dummies’ books are more casual and light-hearted. This isn’t meant as a criticism because on the plus side it is very informative with plenty of tidbits of extra explanations. The author also does well to encourage the reader to seek out and read the early works of philosophy such as those by Plato (which I intend to at some point).
Because of my purpose for reading this book, Chapter 12 was most relevant to me and where existentialism is discussed. However, I was left wondering why existentialism is not included in the earlier chapter entitled “Understanding the ‘Isms’”. My guess is that perhaps there are too many ‘isms’ to discuss but even when existentialism is discussed later in the context of Ryle’s The Concept of Mind I was still unclear as to what existentialism is exactly. I would have liked to have seen a clearer definition somewhere.
As with most ‘For Dummies’ books I would recommended this to those new to philosophy and as a good reference book to refer back to. One of the last couple of chapters is a good signpost to some of the famous philosophy books with a short summary of what they say.
