Aiden is the head of psychiatry at a mental facility. One of his patients, Cael, is an 18 year old kid who has been in the facility for around a month. Cael does not speak or communicate in any way. He draws in his sketch pad but he panics if anyone tries to see his drawings. Eventually during one of his sessions with Aiden, he begins to open up a bit and shows Aiden his drawings. What Aiden sees are horrific depictions of violent acts that have occurred in the facility late at night... attacks on Cael and possibly other patients. Aiden immediately calls Jake, his partner of six years who just happens to be a police officer. Within minutes the facility is swarming with law enforcement. Cael is grabbed and then rescued at the last second by Jake and that bad guy gets away. Aiden and Jake eventually take Cael to their home for protection (presumably) until the kidnapper/rapist is caught. It doesn't take long before their protection turns into a menage situation with Cael. Oh, and Cael has a special ability that is not drawn out much. Sure, it's brought up a few times but I felt that the author could have added more in that regard instead of focusing so much on the relationship between Cael, Aiden and Jake. This ability does help in the resolution of the story. I do give the author credit for the way that played out even if it was a little confusing at first (the riddles, etc. in Cael's last dream).
There's your story. The bad guy gets away. Cael goes home with his psychiatrist and ends up in his and his partner's bed. Eventually the bad guy shows up again, there is a bit of drama and then they all live happily ever after.
This book angered me. It is disturbing on so many levels that I don't know where to begin. I will say that I loved Cael. A lot. He is a child (regardless of his age, he is still a child according to the way he is written) who has been in and out of foster care since he was 7 years old. He is brought into Aiden's facility where he is violated night after night by two different men. Aiden has a problem getting Cael to communicate and when he does? It turns into a sexual thing for the doctor and his life partner . He takes him home for his own protection (it says) and does Aiden try talking to the kid? Counseling him about what he had gone through? The rapes? What brought him to the mental facility in the first place? No. Nothing is ever mentioned again about the sexual assaults until the end of the book when one of the rapists shows up and makes lewd comments. It was all about making Cael the third in the relationship. Cael shows zero signs of distress over the rapes after his initial confession to Aiden. It's like the author decided to use that in the beginning to make the plot of the story but did not follow through. Aiden is a PSYCHIATRIST. He takes Cael to his HOME. Not ONCE during the time Cael lived with Aiden and Jake did either try to talk to him about the horrific attacks that he had endured.
There is a lot of talk in the book about Cael being a "former patient" and that those two words should justify the sexual relationship. I totally disagree. Cael was still Aiden's patient when he left the hospital. Even had he not been, it still would not have been right. It was completely unethical. Cael is a quiet, disturbed, terrified young man and what I saw was a man (men) in authority taking advantage of him. Then there is the sex. As I mentioned above, Cael had been brutally raped several times by two men in the facility. But yet when he had sex with Aiden and Jake there was no fear or trepidation in regards to the act... before, during or after. I know that everyone handles specific situations in different ways and I in no way consider myself to have a vast amount of knowledge on recovery. But if you look at Cael in the beginning of this book you see a terrified young man. I can't see that terrified child suddenly being able to handle the aftermath of the sexual assaults as if they never happened.
Doctor/patient confidentiality went completely out the window. Aiden had no qualms discussing anything and everything about Cael to pretty much whoever would listen.
Aiden and Jake have been in a committed, FAITHFUL relationship for over 6 years and then suddenly they are both eager to welcome Cael in their bed and in their hearts. There is no jealousy by either one. They both are suddenly eager to welcome a third though this has never been something either had even considered before.
I understand suspending belief when it comes to fiction. I am all about doing so if the story is good. I could not do it in this case. What some may see as a nice menage situation where three men come together and fall in love and live happily ever after, what I see is a disturbed young man being taken advantage of by two men who are in positions of authority.
I do not give bad reviews often and it's very rare for me to give only one star but I feel that in this case I have no choice. I am obviously in the minority if other reviews are to go by. Different strokes, I guess.
