Raggedy Ann's wishing pebble, Raggedy Ann and Andy and the camel with the wrinkled knees, Raggedy Ann in the snow white castle, Raggedy Ann and the hobby horse, Raggedy Ann in the deep, deep woods, Raggedy Ann and the happy meadow, Marcella: a Raggedy Ann story
Johnny Gruelle was an American artist, political cartoonist, children's book author and illustrator (and even songwriter). He is known as the creator of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. He had such confidence in his design that often he would create the final ink work without first sketching in pencil.
Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy were the only dolls I ever liked as a child. I loved them to pieces, and read most of their books from the children's section in the library.
I re-discovered the Raggedys at Project Gutenberg, and then stumbled across this book at Thriftbooks while browsing one day a couple of years ago. It is an over-sized book, so I never hauled it down here to the house, it has been lolling around doing nothing on my bookcases up at Mom's.
But since I was there for a whole month instead of my usual week, I decided to catch up on at least a couple of such neglected titles and this was my first choice. The stories here are 'adapted' from various early tales dating back as early as 1924. There was even a cameo appearance in one story by Eddie The Elephant, another Gruelle character from 1921 or so (and one of Mom's favorites ~~ she still has her Eddie Elephant story book that was given to her when the neighbor boy got too old for it. And look, here is the very book! Eddie Elephant)
The stories are great, the pictures are colorful and so charming. Mom and I both loved this book.
I feel like this book lived in my childhood bathroom, or near to it? That is the association I have, the cover mostly. At times it may have been in my closet. But I associate it with that location in my childhood home, and I think that's interesting. The bathroom closet.
The stories are vaguely familiar, and they're not very good. They remind me a bit of the Wizard of Oz mythology, the way the story is told, the setting, the characters, etc. Not really quality literature but nostalgic.
