As one of my GR friends claimed in her review about this book, you'd better grab a box of tissues and brace yourself for an emotional ride...and she was absolutely right!
Delinquent Daddy had my attention from the first page. The premise of the book intrigued me, and being a parent myself, touched me on so many different levels. "Boston Kincaid," is a young, successful attorney who, 10 years ago, was in love with a woman, "Ellie Trenton," while they both attended the University of Kansas. Ellie, being 19 at the time, came from an entirely different family background than Boston's. His family was wealthy and extremely close, while her reality was devoid of parents, (they died when she was only 8), forcing her to live with a goverment assisted elderly great aunt, until college.
Boston and Ellie fell deeply and immediately in love. Both, so young and so full of dreams and aspirations for their future, until one mistake resulted in Ellie's pregnancy with Cassidy. Knowing Boston was about to move away to attend Yale the next year, and realizing he was ashamed of her family status, or lack thereof; Ellie tells Boston she lost the baby and that it would best if they moved on without each other. Twisted words, full of accusations and indescribable heartache, turned their breakup into a bad one. The only problem was, Ellie hadn't lost the baby and for 9 years, she kept it a secret from the man she probably still loved. Night after night at bedtime, Cassidy, by now a beautiful and smart 9 year old, asked her mother to tell her stories about her father and what he was like. Cassidy, realizing she had gathered enough information to track down her father's address, (with the help of a too-smart-for-his-own-good), best friend and neighbor boy, "Keller," she writes and mails "the" letter that changes everything...
This book was a joy to read with it's humor and banter, but also it's character's on-going sorrow and regretfulness. I completely understood why Ellie made the decisions she made, while also relating to Boston's anger in having missed so many years with his daughter, whom he completely and uttery adores. Another book that brought tears to my eyes in a way no other book has and I recommend it for the excellent writing and for the lovely, disasterous, and ultimately sweet story.
