Sheed was born in London to Francis "Frank" Sheed and Mary "Maisie" Ward, prominent Roman Catholic publishers (Sheed & Ward) in the United Kingdom and the United States during the mid-20th century. Wilfrid Sheed spent his childhood in both England and the United States before attending Downside School and Lincoln College, Oxford where he earned BA (1954) and MA (1957) degrees.
Just when I thought I'd read all the Great British Snobs, I found Sheed's book and read his delighted flayings of authors, playwrights, and most of all, fellow reviewers. Don't miss his misguided attempts at one-upping Gore Vidal by claiming that homosexuality is never inherent ("of course it isn't") and the fact that he never gives a favorable review to a woman, though this may be because if one were simply looking at this collection, one would assume he only ever reviewed one female author. But it doesn't matter in the end, because we all know old white British men know more than anyone else.
