The Case of the Perilous Puffin

Rate this book
Librarian Sammi Cupertino thought her Klutz Curse was the most perilous thing about living in Eerie Falls, Ontario

At least until the annual gathering of the Puffin Rescue Society comes to their town. Sammi's eccentric grandfather gets to play host to the bird rescuers, so Sammi drafts her cute new girlfriend, Constable Courtney, to help with the awards ceremony. But Sammi and her friends find their small Canadian town suddenly perilous when a rescue society member is pummelled to death.

To make matters even more precarious, a mundane author has invaded their magical town. Keeping their fae nature out of the author's next book is challenging every resident. Especially Sammi, who runs the magical bookshop, and has a vampiric cat. All are details too juicy, and too revealing to be put in print by the mundane author.

Assisted by her cute new girlfriend, her vampiric cat, and the clueless author, Sammi tries to keep her goose from getting cooked by the murderer. Add in rumours of a ghostly flaming pirate ship, and the mystery takes wing in a new direction.

Can Sammi and her friends crack the case, and point the feather of justice before the perp flies the coop? And, can they do so without revealing their magical nature to the clueless author?

The Case of The Perilous Puffin is the first book in the delightful Eerie Falls cozy mystery series. If you like sassy heroines, snarky talking cats, colorful characters, and a side of spells with your poutine, then you’ll love Alyn Troy’s otherworldly adventures.

Alyn Troy is an American from the Midwest (Indiana) who writes The Mystic Brews and Pixie Twist series of Paranormal Cozy Mysteries. In addition to Indiana, he's lived in Southern California, where the Pixie Twist series is set, and has served as a history docent on a notable pier in SoCal. In his past lives, he's been a journalist, a wedding photographer, and an adjunct professor.

Alyn gets assistance from his fuzzy familiar (AKA "Lord Fuzzbutt"). When not helping his human with the writing of paranormal cozy mysteries, Lord Fuzzbutt likes to sit out outside and watch the hummingbirds dart about like pixies. He often yowls at the door, waiting to head to the patio for chipmunk duty. Fortunately, the little rodents are craftier than Fuzzbutt is.

Alyn's beverage of choice is dark roast coffee with a dash of honey, and a splash of half-n-half. In addition to being half-way competent with his home espresso machine, Alyn makes a mean Mai Tai.

I wanted to like this more than I did...what spoiled it for me was the whole "cozy mystery author as a character telling us about all the tropes of cozy mysteries" thing. I'm holding out hope that that character skips on back to her hometown by the next installment in the series so we can enjoy the magical setting and characters the author has created.

I loved it! So good!

I love the characters, Sammi, Gord, Courtney, Darcy, Cleo!!! Sammi is so caring, and Cleo the undead cat with Sammi’s Gram’s spirit inside is such a character! Fun! And I also loved mundane author DeAnn. Her imaginative use of names was fun! The tone is just right, humorous and carrying excitement. Combine that lighthearted tone with lots of magic and a clever mystery, and you have a winner!

Marvellous penmanship! Really enjoyed this , Sammi and Courtney are in a new relationship but it doesn’t help that everyone and their aunt are taking an interest… A mundane by the name of DeAnn comes to Eerie for the winter . This could prove very troublesome indeed for all the Fae folk who inhabit the village and it’s out of season ! Extra guards in place via magic wards can’t stop the crimes happening under the watchful eyes of the detectives, Sammi and this Authoresses noses . Does this woman pose a threat or is it mere coincidence she turns up in the village at the same time that crimes are abhorrent , determined to write a story even though she’s supposedly on vacation from it all, our amateur sleuth has to keep guarded from being exposed having conversations with her Cat

More fun and games in Eerie Falls. This time there is a mundane/non magical person in town who Sammi befriends. It’s fun seeing how people cope with that. I hope the baby puffin rescues are true as I love puffins. Anyway, back to the book! An unpopular man wins the puffin rescue trophy & the. Is found dead with his head “smashed in”. There is a lot going on in the background of this book & of course, Sammi helps to solve it all with some help from her special cat.

Who knew counting puffins could be so dangerous? Alyn Troy delivers the first of a new series in the Perilous Puffin. It was fun adventure in a new town with new faces.

Sammi and Cleo appear ready to tackle whatever comes their way, with the help of some friends, and delicious donuts, too!

Mystery certainly abounds in the town of Eerie Falls. I look forward to Troy’s newest series. Don’t miss out on the adventure! Grab your copy and jump in!

The Case of the Perilous Puffin

A cozy mystery set in the town of Eerie Falls, Canada inhabited by fae folk. First in series.
A cast of various fae residents including a vampire cat possessed by the spirit of the main heroine’s grandmother and one mundane a cozy mystery writer make for an entertaining story.

This was a fun read. All the locals in town are magical in some way ("fae"), and during the tourist season they make sure to act "normal" around the "mundane" visitors. One of the locals is murdered, so Sammi and a visiting (mundane) author decide to solve the murder to help. Lots of likeable characters, and I loved learning about all the characteristics of the different fae beings.

A lovely start!

I love the world created by Aly Troy and the great stories and characters that he has set in it.
This latest addition has taken first place in the series I'm going to wait eagerly for.
There is so much to love in the adventures of Sammi Cupertino.

Fun murder mystery with quirky and just plain odd characters. One thing threw me as I always associated puffins with the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia and not with the shores of Lake Erie in southern Ontario, and kept me off-kilter throughout my reading of the novel.

A new setting for Alyn, not disappointed at all. Love these characters and location. The mundane adds a nice complicated twist to the whole story.
