Lissy is certain things would be very different if she could leave her flakey mother and live with her perfect dad. It's a nice dream but the reality may fall short. Suggested level: intermediate, secondary.
Julia Owen was born in Auckland on Christmas Eve, 1960. She finished her primary education while her family was living in Rarotonga, before returning to Howick. In 1996 Julia took a six-month course called Te tuhi tuhi ma nga tamariki: writing for children in Mâori and English, at Rawene Polytech. Julia is the mother of four boys and currently lives in the Hokianga being a farmer and writer.
This was a great little book! Authentic, funny, and painful. Lissy is endearing from the start. Her family are utterly difunctional, pretty hilarious (in an Outrageous Fortune kind of way) and heartbreaking too. Despite their chaos, Lissy manages to be level-headed and determined.
