Knopf Mapguides: Paris: The City in Section-by-Section Maps

Rate this book
This opening fold-out contains a general map of Paris to help you visualize the 8 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.

Discover Paris through 8 districts and 6 maps

Latin Quarter/ The islands/ Montparnasse
Orsay/ Louvre/ Opera
Les Halles/ Le Marais
Invalides/ Champ-de-Mars/ Trocadero
Grands Boulevards/ Montmarte
Bastille/ Faubourg Saint-Antoine/ Oberkampf
Menilmontant/ Belleville/ La Villette
Place d’Italie/ Bibliotheque Nationale/ Bercy

For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Paris has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system ( A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.

Transportation and hotels in Paris
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.
A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. is an American publishing house that was founded by Blanche Knopf and Alfred A. Knopf Sr. in 1915.

From the start, Knopf focused on European translations and high-brow works of literature. During World War I these books were cheap to obtain and helped establish Knopf as an American firm publishing European works.

In 1960, Random House acquired the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house. Knopf published textbooks until 1988, when Random House's schools and colleges division was sold to McGraw Hill.

I'm surprised these city guides are not more popular because I have yet to find any that surpass them (and the Paris edition in particular). They pack a lot of essential info into a very compact format and are exceptionally well designed in every aspect from the paper quality to the clarity and aesthetics of the fold-out maps to the carefully curated restaurant and shop recommendations for each area. This is the guide that I still used to explore new neighbourhoods long after I had moved to Paris permanently and the one I lent to my best friends when they came to visit.

This was our constant companion on our trip to Paris a few years ago. It is pocket-sized with pull out maps and concise recommendations for each location. Easy to read and use. We followed many of the suggestions and were consistently impressed with our outcomes. Highly recommend. I just reread the entire book to take me back...

Who needs paper maps in the internet age? Maybe no-one, but my visit to Paris was a lot more pleasant having this map. Rather than having to keep zooming in and out on my phone to figure out where I was, or hunting through tons of landmarks to figure out what I might want to see in the area, I just folded out the appropriate page on the map and had a beautifully laid out and annotated section of the city, right before me. I never thought I would feel strongly enough about a map to give one five stars, but as a tourist accessory, it's now high on my list.

The Knopf guide split up Paris into 10 regions each with a fold out detailed map displaying all of the roads, streets, and alleys in each of the regions. It also had a quick reference to the subway system that I used constantly. The guide was very slim and not ideal for planning a trip, but it was essential for use on the ground when actually walking the streets and I quickly learned that all of the restaurant recommendations were spot-on delicious and budget conscious. This guide book that easily fit in my jacket pocket basically held my hand through my Paris trip.

The quote on the back cover sums up this series perfectly:
"These are joyous books, beautifully organized, full of pleasure even for the non-traveler and wonderful to handle—marvelous examples of modern bookmaking."

It's amazing how much is packed—without clutter—into these beautiful books. Full of background and helpful insight, with the presentation of a world-class museum.

Absolutely the best Paris guide for the tourist who enjoys exploration by walking or bike! Fun pull out maps that clearly identify must-see historical and cultural stops! I used extensively while living in Paris and to help others plan visits.

This guide/map book was fabulous while we were in Paris. It was clear and easy to read, but also full of information. The restaurant recommendations were great too!
