Princess Oni: A Middle Grade Fantasy

Rate this book
An orphan's quest. A lost heir. Secrets revealed and prophecies fulfilled.

North Country, 1198… Unoni is the ugliest name ever. Unwanted. So labeled by the castle lord who holds her and other orphans captive, Unoni longs for a home, a family, and a pretty name. Should she flee the only life she's ever known to face an uncertain future?

One night, by the light of a full moon, she scales the castle's moss-covered wall. A series of near escapes lands her by the river the next night. She bathes in its waters and dares to hope for a future while imagining her past floating downstream. But when she climbs to shore, too weak and sick to continue her journey to somewhere, she submits her future to fate or an unknown god. She sees a light in the distance and stares in terror as it grows closer… until the light envelops her.

Based on Ephesians 1:5, Princess Oni is an adventurous and inspiring read for ages 8 – 11 and a fun family read-aloud. Your child will learn along with Unoni that our identity isn’t about where we live, or our circumstances, but about being adopted by the Best. Father. Ever.

Join Unoni on her journey to becoming Princess Oni and meet lots of friends along the way.

A luminous tale of identity, courage, and the Father-heart of God

Princess Oni is the kind of story that quietly wraps itself around your heart and doesn’t let go. From the very first pages, I was swept into Unoni’s world—a place filled with longing, mystery, and the aching hope that there's more to life than what she's been told.

Unoni’s journey from unwanted orphan to beloved daughter is not just moving—it’s deeply symbolic. I found myself pausing to reflect on scenes like her escape under the moonlight and that powerful moment in the river. These weren’t just plot points; they were echoes of spiritual rebirth, woven into a tale that remains completely approachable and child-friendly.

This book accomplishes the rare feat of being both safe and thrilling—anchored in Biblical values without ever feeling preachy. The characters are vibrant, the friendships tender, and the world so rich that I found myself wanting to linger in North Country a little longer.

What struck me most was how the author gently speaks to readers, reminding every child (and every adult still healing) that they are seen, chosen, and deeply loved. You don’t have to come from a castle to be royalty in the eyes of the Father.

Highly recommended as a read-aloud for families, or for any child navigating their place in the world. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.

Thank you, Parker Harrison, for this beautiful gift of a story.

Princess Oni is a heartfelt and adventurous story that completely captivated me. Unoni’s journey from feeling unwanted to discovering her true identity is powerful and beautifully written. The emotional depth is perfectly balanced with action, suspense, and moments of hope. Young readers will connect with her courage as she steps into the unknown, trusting that her life holds more than she’s been told. The faith based message is uplifting without feeling heavy handed, making it accessible and meaningful. The illustrations add warmth and charm to the experience. This is a wonderful middle grade fantasy that inspires confidence, belonging, and faith.

Wonderful!!

This allegorical tale has plenty of action and adventure for kids simply looking for an interesting story! The themes of good and evil, sacrificial love, trust, obedience and faith are all addressed clearly, however, in ways that even young children will be able to grasp. Beautifully written, the suspense continues up until the very last chapter, and I have to admit I didn't see that last plot twist coming! Bravo!

Highly recommend not just for middle graders, though it's a perfect fit for that age, but also for younger children as a read-aloud. This book just makes me want to gather up some kids, find some crowns, swords, and princess clothes, and act it out!
