Funk & Soul Covers

Rate this book
Following the success of Jazz Covers, this volume features over 500 legendary covers from two genres of black music that have conquered the world. From Marvin Gaye to Michael Jackson, the Temptations to Earth, Wind & Fire, and James Brown to Prince, Funk & Soul Covers portrays the often breathtaking album art that helped make these essentially African-American musical forms both world famous and massively influential, and an essential part of 20th century music history. Featuring interviews with key industry figures—including performers, producers, designers and writers—Funk & Soul Covers provides cultural context and design analysis for each featured record cover.

I’m very familiar with Taschen’s album cover collection, which although entertaining was too broad in remit to really provide you with any substantial revelations. So I’m delighted that simply by being a bit stricter in what it covers (although a few of these feel like they’re closer to jazz than either funk or soul), this is a far more rewarding collection. It’s got some famous classics, some more familiar lost treasures and then a deeply pleasing amount of absolute obscurities. Plus it’s got entertaining and well written introductions and interviews that genuinely put the work into a wider context. A lovely volume

A wonderful selection of album covers from the heyday of soul music. I would have liked a little more information about the music itself, and the musicians and artists who made it - but the artwork is fantastic and the selection of covers reflects the broad range of offerings during what I would argue was one of the most exciting periods of American popular music in terms of innovation, cross-genre fusion, and experimentation. This is a classic “coffee table book” that can be opened at any page and flipped through at leisure. Over and over again. Nirvana for soul music geeks like me.

For me it is a book of nostalgic value. To see all the many album covers that I still own and album covers I used to own and album covers I have never seen by artist that I know and don't know. If you're into album cover art this is a nice collection. The sister book is called 1000 Record Covers.

More fun than a barrel full of funky monkeys. I got lost in the 60s and 70s looking through nearly 400 pages of covers from the best and worst of funk and soul. The covers range from classic to dated, profound to ridiculous, and suggestive to downright sleazy (we can thank Joel Brodsky for these)

Fark! If you had even a quarter of the albums in here you'd have one of the best record collections going...dreams are free even if old funk vinyl isn't...
