Temporarily reunited with his wizard mother, Gom learns the identity of his evil nemesis Katak and finds himself a key figure in the battle to save the world of Ulm from destruction
More fun in Ulm! Gom sets off to find himself a master in order to become a wizard, and ends up on the run for stealing a horse that he didn't steal. I don't think this book is quite as exciting as The Riddle and the Rune (after all, most of this book takes place in one setting and revolves around finding an apprenticeship instead of traveling across the country while escaping a skull-headed bird), but it is still very good. More magic and friends (both good and bad), and happily, more adventures to come!
Like the rest of the books in the series, beautifully written with poignant moments. I take away a star only because of Gom’s naive kindness to the obviously-untrustworthy Mat. Still excited to find out what happens next!
