Like many other Derby suburbs, Littleover was, not so long ago, a village in the true sense - an independent community with Derby far away across the fields. Indeed, residents still refer to ‘going to the village’ when they talk about visiting the shops on Burton Road.
Alas, the Littleover of old has long since been swept away by the tide of progress. True, some interesting corners still remain to remind us of times past, but even they are being threatened.
So, Ian Griffiths’ book is particularly important, telling, as it does, about the history of the community and containing many rarely published photographs of the Littleover of yesteryear.
It will delight Littleover residents in particular and, indeed, anyone interested in the history of Derby.
A great compendium of historical facts, old photographs, and some shared memories of a few local families, all presented in methodical fashion in an easy-to-read format. It is a short summary of centuries’ worth of development and change, and manages to include so much information of value and worth without being woody
