Two lonely boys born worlds apart learn the meaning of friendship and trust.
It is thirteen years since the Battle of Sundor at the end of "The Starstone." Gerrad, the Lake Lord's son, born the year after the battle, longs to meet Gom and share an adventure. On his twelfth birthday he sneaks off to find him. He meets Essie & Carrick and befriends a homeless boy. Does he find Gom? Sort of. And he gets his adventure, maybe more than he bargained for. At its end, his life is changed forever. This, the fifth book in the combined series, offers a rare outside view of Gom, and is the first span of the bridge that leads to the culmination of Gom's own quest. An exciting adventure in which Gom, busy working in his mother's magic dwelling, play a brief but crucial part!
I missed Gom. He is not in this book very much, but it was so nice to be back in Pen'langoth and Ulm despite his absence. And even though Gom is barely in the story, there were other familiar characters, as well as some new ones. I didn't especially like the story telling tone of the writing, but the narrator intrusions were minimal, and the ones in the last chapter were actually quite nice.
Gerrad, the young protagonist, finds more adventure than he had looked for on his "quest" for Gom, or rather, for stories about Gom. The story is exciting, but I actually more enjoyed piecing together what had happened in the twelve years since The Starstone and what had become to Gom and his friends.
Perhaps 4 1/2 stars, due to my very minimal complaints, but all in all, it is a wonderful story! Also, it stands alone quite well as the events in the previous books while mentioned, are not of huge importance to the plot.
