Cathy Marie Hake

As a child, Cathy Marie Hake had an imaginary playmate. Now "grown up," she indulges in a host of imaginary friends as she writes. She teasingly says she decided if those voices in her head were talking, she might as well write down what they said and make a living by doing it. She met her sweetheart in the High School department at church and married him after finishing nursing school. They live in Southern California and have two children and two dogs (one of them even moos - one of the dogs that is, not the kids). Faith in God, a loving family, and a wacky sense of the ridiculous keep her going.

Known for surfing across the kitchen on a dropped dill pickle slice, waterskiing on sea anemone spit, and using Right Guard® as hair spray; she considers herself living proof that God does, indeed, possess a healthy sense of humor.

Cathy loves classical music, romantic getways with her husband, and Diet Pepsi Free®. "I need chocolate to survive, love my friends, and enjoy a deep personal relationship with the Lord. Although an extrovert, I'm very conservative on a personal level."

In her writing, Cathy attempts to capture a unique glimpse of life and how a man and woman can overcome obstacles when motivated by love. In her inspirational pieces she enjoys the freedom of showing how Christ can enrich a loving couple's relationship.

My main problem with this book is that it was 3 novellas which mean there wasn't enough time to put enough in to make them enjoyable enough for me to give this 4 stars. Also, and this is common in Hake's novels, the prayers sound very early 21st century/late 20th century. To be fair, my average rating for Hake's books is in between 3.1 and 3.2, but then they are romance novels so that's par for the course for me.

As the blurb says, this is about three Scottish brothers who emigrate from Scotland to Texas and there find romance (Hake was a Christian romance writer but appears to have retired about 8 years ago.) The idea of a collection is nice, but as I said, each story would have been better as a full fledged novel. I did like the fact that there were real world problems in here and not just fluffy ones.

Summary:
A father's last gifts to his sons accompany three young men from the hills of Scotland to the plains of Texas. The Gregor brothers-Robert, a doctor; Duncan, a cobbler; and Christopher, a lawman-set up shop in a small Texas town and quickly make the acquaintance of local women. Tragedy has struck Mercy Stein on the eve of her wedding, leaving her soul battered. Alone and crippled, Carmen Rodriguez wears a protective shell of bitterness. Harboring a secret, Kathryn Regent always seems to be getting in others way. Can their father's gifts help the brothers lead these women to healing faith?
Plot:
This has potential to be a good plot, but it didn't reach that potential. I was bored the entire time, and found myself skimping paragraphs out of boredom. It didn't reach any romance until very late into the book, and when it did, it was not good at all.
Writing:
Cathy Marie Hake's writing style did not sit well with me at all. I think part of the problem was that the protagonists were Scottish and their dialogue was weird. She's a talented writer, it just wasn't for me.
Characters:
The characters were okay, but not extraordinary. They were really realistic. They sometimes got on my nerves, but other than that, they were fine.
Overall:
This was a puny collection of stories. I just didn't like it. I didn't hate it, I just don't like it. I do wish there was more romance. I went into this book thinking there would be lots of romance, but it was way to late in the story for my liking.
Recommendations:
12+ female. Once again, this is definitely geared toward girls. If you want a quick read with interesting dialogue, pick this up.

This has to be one of my most favorite books by Cathy Marie Hake.

The collection of stories all happen chronologically and in the same town, and are based on Micah 6:8: "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" So, the first book is "To Love Mercy" etc. Each story portrays a widely different set of circumstances, such as rape and rejection, disabilities and compassion, and justice and determination.

"Texas Brides" was a blessing to me not only through its spiritual applications, but also its laugh-out-loud humour, and clean story lines. I've read it at least several times.

Loved this book.

It was sad, compassionate, humorous, believable, & just plain good reading! Well written blending culture & customs from another country with the new Texas land being settled. Appreciated the continuation of each brother's life. Good book!

Re read of a cheesy Christian cowboy romance novel I recalled enjoying in time time in a cult. Couldn’t stop thinking about it recently so I hunted down the paperback from a used store.

Figured it out- this book is so weirdly sex positive, feminist, inclusive, and funny…. Just add a wet blanket of jesus-y overtone that honestly neither advances the plot nor ties things together other than in the very most silly of ways (do justice- there’s a cop storyline, love mercy- literally a person named mercy, walk humbly- a person with a limb difference).

Can’t say that I’d recommended it but it was enjoyable to re read and see why it still stuck with me.

Also there is a very small armadillo scene that makes me laugh every time I think about it.

I thought this was a really cute short read. I LOVE how the story is all about Micah 6:8, it give the story character. I will definatly read the other virginia book by this author. Although because it is short, it does feel rushed at some parts, especially the epaloug, I would have loved to have a whole long chapter telling us how they are living their lives. But other than that, if you need a short story to pick up and finish in less than an hour this is a great choice! Will definatly reread!

while I enjoyed the stories the fact that it was three books in one meant that there weren't as many details and developments as I would like, I just felt like everything was the bare minimum and I would have preferred some: "just cause". But overall I would probably read it again.

Really enjoyed the three stories. In the same vein of Redeeming love. Based in the Christian religion, but not overly churchy.

I started reading and could not put it down. The way Cathy wrote each book drew you into their lives and how God moves in our lives. The words of wisdom, Jenny coming to know Jesus as Savior is beautifully written. The Word of God is brought out as important in a Christian's life. Book one touched my heart and made me cry and root for Rob & Mercy, book 2 me cheering for Duncan & Carmen and Carmens heart in both book 1 & 2 shows you what walking Jesus love is but, service can become a thing of doing and listen to what the Lord wants you to do. Book 3 had me laughing and cheering for Chris & Wren (Katie) and when talked to Katie about how the Lord loves her was beautiful actually how that was written in all three books is beautiful. This is a definite, must read. You will not be disappointed.

Texas Brides by Cathy Marie Hake, is a delightful trilogy wrapped into one book. Following the lives of three brothers fresh from Scotland, you watch as they discover love in a new land. Though the stories were predictable, they were enjoyable none the less. I usually enjoy the drama of a good suspense novel, but once in a while I like to read a book that moves at an easy, carefree pace. Again, pulling on my love for the west, Texas Brides made for a delightful escape at the end of the day.

Note: If you decide to pick up Texas Brides, you might enjoy a Bride for a Bit as well. Co-written by Hake, it too is an enjoyable story set in the old west

God is in Texas

God is in Texas, along with the New immigrants
“The McGregor Brothers”. The three brothers finally make it to America, but loose there “Da” (father) just prior to landing at Ellis Island. Luckily they have a destination and a friend whom has advised them, so they set off for Texas.
There are three stories one for each brother, but you hear about the others all along, these stories could be stand alone, but come in this nice 3 story, book.
This is a must read and by a really great Author, if you’ve never read any of Cathy Hakes Books you are definitely missing out. She is near the top of my favorite’s.
ENJOY THE ADVENTURE !!!

Great inspirational stories

I really y enjoy reading lovely books centered and infused with how having a true love for Christ with romance. There was a time when love was trusting, honoring, and faithfulness to each other only after you placed God first. In this world love is used for all types of degradation and selfishness. It is rare to see a couple who have weathered the storms, catastrophic ways of this world. Purity is as rare as a unicorn. Thank you so much for the reality of the characters carmen

I love this book so much! It is one of my all-time favorites. I love how the subsequent stories still mention characters, both major and minor, from the previous books.

All the characters have realistic flaws and are believably realistic. Storylines and plots are good too.

This was a great book! It is put as a Historical Romance, and Christian book. However, you are not beat over the head, with either. Very tasteful romance, and references to the Bible. I really enjoyed this.

This is a 3-in-1 historical romance collection about the Gregor brothers who each receive a gift and a piece of advice from their dying father on their voyage to America. And, of course, each brother finds a special bride.

Quick, fun reads - my favorite was the first one, To Love Mercy.

While these stories of three Scottish brothers and their brides display Cathy Marie Hake's usual with and humor, they also tackle several difficult subjects with taste and grace. I doubt anyone is surprised with happy endings.
