Design Museum is a museum founded in 1989, located by the River Thames near Tower Bridge in central London, England. The museum covers product, industrial, graphic, fashion and architectural design. In 2007 the museum was listed by The Times newspaper as number two in their top five museums of the year.

Deyan Sudjic is the current Director of the museum. He succeeded Alice Rawsthorn in 2006. Unlike most large London museums, the entrance is not free, as it is not subsidised by the UK Arts Council. For this reason it operates as a registered charity, and all funds generated by ticket sales aid the museum in putting new exhibitions together. The museum attracts 200,000 visitors annually.

This small book has two different parts, first part talks VERY briefly about how to analyze a room and its function to design a best way to light it up. For me, with master degree in architecture and 4 years experience of interior designing, it didn’t have something new, But maybe it does for someone less involved in architecture. The second part was interesting for me and it was actually way better described. It was about product designing. How to design an astonishing light source.

I think the title is very pretentious. "How to design" anything is not something to teach on a book. You can show and give information how to construct, but to design you have to learn about much more than just construct, draw and select material. That "much more" don't come in a book.

Nevertheless I read the book without complain about it. And I found it quit interesting. Indeed the content and vision of Design for the autor and some of "artists" come in opposite direction from mine. I say "artists" because on my opinion some of the called designers on the book don't make design, they express themselves in a way to provoque, to enchant or something else than provide solutions for people and their needs. I know that I don't own the definition of Design, but I can see clearly what is not.

Anyway, the book have a good information in the field. Good images and inspiration, some stories very interesting, but not a book to be reference in lightning.
