It's much too hard to find stories and history specific to the Lenape people. I have utterly no idea where I got this book, I found it in a big box of other books in my workshop, but I pulled it out of that box and didn't put it down until I had read every page (including the lengthy introduction, which is worth reading for context and history.) and only then did I pass it off to my father (a member of the Lenape tribe) to read. This book has allowed me to see more of Lenape culture and connect stories to similar folk tales from other tribes and cultures, and it's allowed me a stepping stone for learning more about my family.

ممتع جدا والتّرجمة كمان سلسة ومحترفة حقيقي.
لو سألتني إيه أكتر حاجة عجباني في الكتاب ده، هقولك الجملة إللي قالها في المقدمة، إنه بيسجّل القصص دي كتأريخ أصيل لسيرة أجداده، خصوصًا إن مفيش حاجات كتيرة اتكتبت عن سيرة الأجداد والقبائل والأصول، وإن كل المعلومات كانت يا دوبك حاجات جانبية كده وهوامش في متون كتب مش حاجة أساسية.
الانتصار عامة لفكرة "التّأريخ"، بعيدًا بقى عن تقديم متعة أدبية أو أي شيء آخر، في حد ذاته مغامرة تُحسب لكل كاتب وناشر.
وأكيد الكتاب طبعًا هيعجب كل مهتم بتاريخ سكّان أمريكا الأصليين.

A very enjoyable collection of folk tales...but upon further research, I learned that this book has been called out by other Lenape historians who have found discrepancies and problems with the text. Which means I have more work to do to find better sources!

سيرة أصول سكان أمريكا الأصليين أو ما يدعى باللينابية من أول اكتشافهم للأرض إلى تفرعهم لقبائل شتى، حكايات عن حروبهم ومعتقداتهم الروحانية وقصصهم الشعبية وأساطيرهم، كتاب ممتع جدًا وأسلوب الكتابة رائع. يجب أن أشيد بالترجمة في غاية الروعة من جنة عادل لم أحس لوهلة أن الكتاب مترجم من إبداع الترجمة.

To me, the more morally ambiguous, the more perplexing, the more pointless seeming the tale, the better.

The story of Wehixamu'kes is my favorite example of this. The story starts off by describing Wehixamu'kes as a lazy good for nothing Amelia Bedilia type--everything you tell him he takes literally. But he turns out to possess superhuman strength, and an unlikely seeming capacity for evil. After deciding to ditch his village (after killing a few of his kinsmen due to a misinterpreted order), he meets a sickly young boy whose head he tries to slice in two with an axe. The boy moves quick as lightning out of the way, and after a short conversation about why Wehixamu'kes just tried to bludgeon him, they become friends. We learn that the boy is a friend of The Thunder Gods, and has a banshee like screech he uses in battle (Wehixamu'kes does as well). Throughout their friendship, the boy gets stronger and Wehixamu'kes gets weaker. After a few more attempts to kill the boy, he succeeds in slicing the boy's head down the middle while his back is turned. The boy picks up the pieces and puts them back together however, and tells Wehixamu'kes, "Well, you finally got me, I didn't think you would. I could kill you right now but I won't, I'll let you live alone instead." The boy goes away and dies within a year as his head slowly comes apart for good. Wehixamu'kes then gets challenged to catch a falling tree, which he does, but sinks into the ground as he catches it. He says that he will be back when he is needed, specifically when the white man is causing trouble, before vanishing into the ground forever.

What does it mean!!! Incredible.

These Lenape legends and myths are powerful but also entertaining. Yet the best part of he book may be its 45-page Introduction, which explains the culture, religion, and history of Lenape/Delaware/Algonquin from the native perspective, including the notorious alleged sale of Manhattan to the Dutch for $24 in beads. The author Tree Beard is a current chief of the Lenape nation.

في وجهة نظري ان حملة الابادة التي تعرضت لها شعوب الهنود الحمر على يد الاستعمار الأوروبي والأمريكين الأوائل ابشع بكثير من مذابح الهولوكوست الخاصة بهتلر... فنحن في تلك الحالة لا نتحدث عن مجرد إبادة جسدية بل إبادة لتراث وتاريخ و أثر لشعب كامل لم يتبقى منه سوي صورة نمطية زرعتها هوليوود عن الهنود الحمر في أفلام الغرب الأمريكي ( الويسترن) وبعض المهمشين الذي يبحثون عن مكان لهم في الجسد الأمريكي العملاق ويتذكرون انهم أصحاب الأرض الأصليين.....

الكتاب ليس مجرد تجميع لحكايات شعبية عن الهنود الأحمر وبالاخص عن قبيلة اللينابيه التي ينتمي إليها الكاتب... ولكن يحاول في مقدمته ان يبحث عن مسار للتاريخ والأحداث التي مرت علي شعوب الهنود الأحمر قبل الاستعمار وبعده... ثم مع بداية الحكايات تكتشف مدى تسامح شعوب الهنود الحمر وارتباطهم بالطبيعة واتصالهم بها ودي كانت السمة الابرز في كل حكاياتهم... و كعادة الحكايات الشعبية والميثولوجيا الخاصة بهم تتكرر تيمات الخلق وبدايات الكون مع اغلب قصص الميثولوجيا التي قرأتها كمثال الميثولوجيا اليونانية و المصرية القديمة....

كتاب قد يبدو في إطاره العام مجرد مجموعة من الحكايات المسلية ولكنه في نفس توثيق لتراث وثقافات شعوب الهنود الحمر كي لا تضيع من حسابات الزمن

My great-grandfather was half Lenape, a tribe almost no one knows about so I was thrilled to find this book. Opens with a detailed but condensed bit of history of the tribe and their battles with the colonizers before jumping into the folklore. This small little book, not even making it to 200 pages, holds so much weight.

Written in a relaxed style that reads as though it had been transcribed from oral storytelling, this book, through an extended introduction and brief commentaries on individual stories, imparts a wealth of information on Lenapé history, cosmology, and culture.

The introduction turned out to be the most valuable portion of the book for me - it is a history of the Algonquin tribes of NE Americas, a history overshadowed by the colonial account.

i've read dozens of books on the Lenape and this is the closest to the truth i've found so far . the 45 page intro is just as great as the stories
