Catharine Maria Sedgwick was born December 28, 1789 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. As a young woman, Sedgwick took charge of a school in Lenox. She converted from Calvinism to Unitarianism, which led her to write a pamphlet denouncing religious intolerance. This further inspired her to write her first novel, A New-England Tale.

With her work much in demand, from the 1820s to the 1850s, Sedgwick made a good living writing short stories for a variety of periodicals. She died in 1867, and by the end of the 19th century, she had been relegated to near obscurity. There was a rise of male critics who deprecated women's writing as they worked to create an American literature.

Interest in Sedgwick's works and an appreciation of her contribution to American literature has been stimulated by the late 20th century's feminist movement. Beginning in the 1960s, feminist scholars began to re-evaluate women's contributions to literature and other arts, and created new frames of reference for considering their work. In addition, the advent of low-cost electronic reproductions, which became available at the end of the 20th century, made Sedgwick and other nineteenth-century authors' work more accessible for study and pleasure.

I listened to the dramatized edition by the Lamplighter Theatre. I can't explain how awesome these Lamplighter Theatre dramatizations are. This one makes it to the top of the list. I can't decide which one is my favorite right now. It's a three-way tie between A Basket of Flowers, Buried in the Snow, and this one. They all are SO good, and yet all different stories, so it's almost impossible to choose, as each has a great message of it's own. If you haven't figured out already, I would recommend this book, as well as the other Lamplighter Theatre dramatizations.

An excellent short book! It is a great story about the value of honesty and integrity and love for other people that do not look the same. It shows that even in the rough people God can bring about change and make them a new creation.

Great little read! Inspiring! It is a slow start. But, once it gets going you will not be able to put it down until you found out what happens to Clap and Harry.

I had heard of Lamplighters, but I don't think I every took the time to pick one up. I am very glad I stumbled into this story. An amazingly uplifting story of abuse, heart ache, and redemption. The characters are well fleshed out, considering that this is an adaptation from the book. It is a book that tells us that a steadfast friend can make the difference in another's life. It also describes life as difficult and messy. A wonderful story that could be enjoyed by an entire family. I think back on the times that we shared audio stories on long trips. Those times might be past with the advent of seat back videos, but this could make you want to try to recapture the joy of listening to a story together.

This one was hard for me to get into. While I appreciate the author's purpose was, it was extremely heavy-handed and honestly was more of a morality tale, not a novel that lets themes and the reader find each other. Maybe others will have more luck with it, but I had to put it down for now.

Sad. Unexpected twists. Friendship. Truth. Pain. Love. A great little story with a wonderful lesson!
