Fourteen-year-old Zack Gilman is not what you'd call a happy kid. The mild-mannered son of the world's biggest Minnesota Vikings fan, he is doomed to spend his days being dragged to football games, where he's forced to sing fight songs and make bratwurst runs for his dad's boisterous posse. The problem is, Zack hates all organized sports. The other problem is, he's six-foot-three, weighs 250 pounds, and his dad sees him as the next Vikings football MVP.
It starts out as an ordinary day at the Minnesota Metrodome. When Zack is nominated vice president in charge of bratwurst by his dad's football cronies, he grudgingly sets out on a food run, only to find himself caught in a freak snowstorm. Zack loses his sense of direction and literally stumbles upon a strange key-like object. The moment he picks it up, Zack find himself in another world, another time, and on an adventure he never bargained for.
The most curious thing to me is wondering how much of this book is actually considered historically or mythically accurate. One tribe is led by females, the birds talk and squabble like siblings, etc. However, the series is fine. It's not spectacular, but it's interacting enough to keep you going. It's a really good series for the younger crowd who are interested in giants, gods, and vikings, but for a slightly older crowd, it's not enough to keep you focused for too long.
In the book Viking Pride it is very creative and action packed. It all starts when Zack Gillman is at a Vikings football game with his dad and some of his dad's friends. Zack really doesn't care for football so he is not in a great mood. They are all tailgating in the parking lot having a good time. Zack is sent of to go get hot dogs at the hot dog stand, thats when everything goes wrong. A sudden snow storm hits hard and next thing Zack know's he is surrounded but nothing but white snow. As Zack is trying to take in what just happened he suddenly finds a key in the snow. Zack now knows that he is not in the parking lot anymore because he runs over a hill and can't believe what he see's. He see's vikings and bear's fighting. He see's that one of the viking's is being held down by a bear and he sprints over and knock's the bear flat on his back. He is soon identified by the viking's as the lost boy. He goes back to camp with the vikings and they are all celebrating, all Zack want's to do is just go back home. His way out is by finding a chest that goes to the key he found. He will go on a difficult journey with the Viking's to get him home!!! I would recommend this book to many people and I think it would be a good add on to the book shelf.
