Rate this book

The Japanese have gotten it into their heads that if Mainland China’s bid to join the UN passes an upcoming vote, this will provide them with a crucial new market for their burgeoning exports. But there’s one problem: America’s unbending support for Chang Kai-Chek’s Formosa, and their unwillingness to acknowledge mainland China (1970 cold war nonsense) The US government has managed to ‘line up’ enough votes in the UN to prevent China from joining and they’re horrified, horrified to discover that someone is trying to influence the vote against them when the ambassador from Lesotho and $50k in bribes are accidentally blown up in a Black Panther pad in the village where some bomb-making has gone wrong. We know that a Japanese agent is working with the Black Panthers to bribe and coerce enough votes for China to join, but prince Malko Linge, Son Altesse Serenessime (SAS), and special agent for the CIA, has to figure all this out as the story unfolds. Along the way he gets dosed in Harlem, beaten up, and thrown into the mixer of a cement truck; he has sex with a beautiful Formosan operative in an orgy with African ambassadors and luxury escorts (Linge has been provided with unlimited call girl credit as his primary tool in getting the truant countries back on side); and he ends up foiling a last desperate attempt by the Japanese agent to introduce a cyanide compound (called cyclon) into the UN air vents - hence the name Cyclone a l’ONU.

Fun adventure.

Mon premier SAS.

Fairly disgusting. Racist and sexist beyond even what one would expect for a book from that time, with gratuitous rape and orgies thrown in for good measure.

And if that was not enough, the story is just plain bad. The SAS series are known for accurate descriptions of exotic locales, it fails miserably when visiting New York.
