This is not going to be a typical book review. Take a walk with me.
Story time folks… from the beloved Frog and Toad children’s book series, Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel…
We begin when Toad says, “My list tells me that we will go for a walk.”
“All right,” said Frog. “I am ready.”
Frog and Toad went on a long walk.
Then Toad took the list from his pocket again.
He crossed out: Take a walk with Frog.
Just then there was a strong wind.
It blew the list out of Toad's hand. The list blew high into the air.
"Help!" cried Toad. "My list is blowing away. What will I do without my list?"
"Hurry!" said Frog. "We will run and catch it."
"No!" shouted Toad, "I cannot do that."
"Why not?" asked Frog.
"Because," wailed Toad, "running after my list is not one of the things that I wrote on my list of things to do!"
Oh goodness! Poor Toad! Nothing messes with our list, like life turning left.
And it’s not news that there’s already a lot on our lists, and a lot on our plates, and too many plates to juggle.
Bottom line:
It’s time to hit the Pause button.
This is never easy to do, as we live in a world that does not typically honor slowing down or space for healing, and replenishment, and spiritual hydration. And perhaps letting go of those ‘my list of things to do’ that have a tendency to drag us down.
So…
Maybe it’s time for a different list.
Not a ‘my list of things to do’ per se, but an ‘I’m grateful for this in my life and our world’ list. One or two things a day on that list might do our heart good.
Like taking a walk with a good friend, and not being worried if the list blew high into the air to nowhere.
There is so much we can learn from the words in a children’s book.

Reading some of the classic stories that Arnold Lobel brought to life brings back some great memories for me, which I hope to pass along to Neo. In this collection, best friends Frog and Toad test their bravery together, as well as enjoy recounting tales of their dreams, find time for a small snack, and discover the importance of following a plan for the day. Easy to read, Neo took the reins and led us through these adventures, keen to see what Frog and Toad would do next. Lobel has created a timeless classic here, which Neo may be able to read to the next generation of would-be Goodreads users.

Toad and Frog are such comfortable companions. The things they do are simple but the lessons they learn are profound, yet delightful. Growing seeds is hard work; if you lose your to do list, just make a new one; being brave is easier with a friend; If you self-aggrandize everyone else gets smaller, even your best friend. I wish I had known these books when my son was small. Maybe I’ll read it to him now after all.

mis cuentos favoritos de esta colección son “el jardin” y “las galletas.” son demasiados pertinentes para mi!!
no me gusta mucho el cuento final, “el sueño.” es muy surrealista y triste, hasta que sepo despierta. we could psychoanalyze the hell out of his eerie dream, and it's such an interesting and odd way to end the book.
i’m so grateful that their are four sapo y sepo books. they make me so happy 🖤 reading this series is probably the best decision i've made this year. an absolute joy.

- this delightful little volume, together with its three companions, was one of my reading staples, as a young girl. Like all the Frog and Toad books, it contains five brief tales, each of which highlights some important characteristic of one or both of its amphibian heroes, and each of which benefits from Lobel's uniquely understated sense of humor, compassionate eye for the (very human) foibles of his subjects, and appealing artwork.
In A List, we see the dangers of becoming too inflexible about our plans and routines, when Toad makes a list of things to do one day, and then, finding himself deprived of that list by the wind, refuses to do anything at all! The Garden follows Toad as, determined to have a beautiful garden like Frog, he impatiently waits for his seeds to grow, trying everything he can, from playing his violin to haranguing them, to hurry their germination along. Cookies offers a hilarious examination of will power and indulgence, as Frog and Toad discuss the necessity of putting away the cookies they are enjoying, all while they continue to eat. The 'successful' solution supplied by Frog ends up a temporary measure, at best! Inspired by the fairy-tales they have been reading, Frog and Toad set out to explore in Dragons and Giants, encountering a number of terrifying dangers - everything from snakes to avalanches - and insisting (even as they flee and hide) that they are not afraid. Finally, Toad's fantasies of being the best (and of showing up his friend) lead to unexpected - but thankfully unreal - results in The Dream.
As always, when rereading one of these classics of beginning-reader literature, I am struck by the immense authorial skill it takes to accomplish so much - to communicate such subtle nuances of emotion; to explore, both humorously and compassionately, the vagaries of personality, and of human (I mean amphibian!) friendship - with such a limited vocabulary. It's simply astonishing! Unlike the earlier Frog and Toad book, which won a Caldecott Honor for its artwork, Frog and Toad Together was awarded a Newbery Honor for its text - one of the few early readers that can boast that distinction - and it not difficult to see why! Of course, the artwork is also immensely appealing (as is always the case with Lobel), making this an ideal title for young children just getting going with independent reading. Highly recommended, to all young frog and toads (I was, and still am more of a Toad than a Frog) looking for good books!

Is this the best book ever written?
Well, Yeah.
It encompasses the human experience in five digestible vignettes.
The very real human desire to impose our own control over outcomes that need to take their own good time. For Toad, it is his garden. For parents, it is the not entirely malleable humans we are trusted to tend to maturity.
Should we prize will power over joy, or in this case, cookies? At least the birds were happy in the end.
What does it mean to be brave? Surviving long enough to make it back home and hide under your covers or in the closet.
What is more prized, fame and glory or companionship? Do you even need to ask?
And my favorite (which should have come first) The reliance on lists to safely make it through the day, and the utter satisfaction of crossing off each task. As both Toad and I know, it is the best way to live a life.

I love the Frog and Toad books. Toad is hilariously neurotic, especially for an amphibian, and I love the way Frog tries to keep him sane. My favorite story in this collection is the one when they try to stop eating cookies. After several failed attempts, Frog finally throws the cookies out to the birds. Toad laments that they have no more cookies, and Frog comforts him by telling him about how much willpower they have instead. Toad says, "You may keep it all, Frog. I am going home to bake a cake". My thoughts exactly.

Folks, you can't have a gift better than this or any book by Lobel, and I will tell you why.
First, I want to direct your attention to the fact that this is a level reader. Frog and Toad was written for or is in the language deemed perfect for, kids attempting to read on their own for the first time.
There are criteria for a level reader: It has to have words on the approved list for whatever level, this one I believe is for first grade, and it has to be G-rated. You could literally pick vocabulary off of the level list and use the words loosely together, and you could publish a level reader.
Thousands have done this.
What Arnold Lobel did, was to write some of the deepest most meaningful plot lines in the history of children's books and they ALL adhere to level vocabulary.
His books, and this one being one of his best, are like the Haikus of level readers. Somehow Lobel conveyed love, friendship, and an array of manners in limited vocabulary.
In my favorite story, Frog and Toad make and eat too many cookies. To curb their intentions at the insistence of Frog, they tie them up in a box, put the box on a shelf, and even eventually throw the cookies to the birds. Frog points out that the two are learning willpower. After almost losing their lives to the birds in order to learn what willpower is, Toad walks away grumpily. "You can keep it all, I'm going home now to bake a cake!"
Lobel could have been half as lazy and sold just as much, but he has TONS of books that are all clever and amazing. Stuff Dick and Jane, and buy Lobel, because when an I Can Read author is a best-seller, you know you have something.

I think I like the first one even better. But this is the one honored by the Newbery committee so this is the one I read this month, for the discussion in the Children's Books group.
I like that the stories are both silly and profound, with the balance moving from more silliness to more subtle Literary value by the end of the book.
I just reminded my son, currently in training to be a math professor, of them. He says "Of course I remember them. My favorites. Absolute classics."

Am I counting books that I read my kids for story time? Yes I am, when you are going for the Disney 365 you have to take what you get, you can't be choosey or overly honorable with what you will log as a book god damnit. Also I'm writing this review (along w the other two picture books I read for story time) bc I'm procrastinating writing my Blood Meridian review so let me live. Anyway this was very wholesome and ofc love the style and the illustrations. Good messages and the frog and toads relationship is just great. Also some of these stories are much more thematically complex than you might expect. I rly appreciate when kids media does not over simplify itself and treats the children as capable readers/ analyzers of media. Literally all the stories were hits, the garden, the one about the performance dream, the to-do list. And honestly all the messages/ morals were ones that were still v relevant to my adult life.
