I bought this book so I could gain a better understanding of home construction, maintenance and DIY in preparation for sanding back and polishing our floorboards, fixing a few cracks, replacing our pergola and re-doing the backyard. This book is an excellent resource on everything you need to know about your home from plumbing to laying bricks to painting to gardening. The information and illustrations are better than I could have hoped for. I believe you could build a house from scratch based on this manual. If you just want to know how to fix up the occasional thing that goes wrong - small repairs, stains, mildew etc - then this book might be too much for you and you might be better off with When Duct Tape Just Isn't Enough, also from Popular Mechanics.
