All Meredith Costain knew when she accepted Christopher Hedge's offer to take care of his granddaughter at his rambling country estate was that it was exactly the kind of sanctuary she was seeking. And so it seemed -- at first. Hedgerow, with its gracious farmhouse, the fresh green fields, the cool woodlands filled with the song of birds and streams promised peace and quiet and innocence. But Hedgerow was far from innocent. And Meredith's unexpected arrival awakened the sleeping evil that lay beneath.
Strand by strand Meredith found herself being pulled into the strange web of hate, violence, and love that had already driven one person to suicide...or was it murder?
I have read almost 200 Gothic Romance books and this one was just plain stupid. Meredith is supposed to be spending time with 7 year old Tracey, but she is spending most of her time the men of the family. Yes there is a mystery, in most gothic mysteries the herione finds herself in the middle of it, but this Meredith has nothing to do with her and she just nosey. The book did not even get interesting until the couple of chapters when everything was revealed. I would reccomend, just skip this one.
Kind of a 'Rebecca' feel, but set in upstate New York in the '60s. And it is very '60s--but still a suspenseful and interesting read. Kept me guessing to the end.
