Rate this book
In this delicious collection of recipes, Madhur Jaffrey shows us that Indian food need not be complicated or involve hours in the kitchen. Take a few well chosen spices and readily available ingredients, and in a few easy steps you can make a delicious prawn curry from Goa; succulent chicken baked in an almond and onion sauce; hearty Sri Lankan beef with coconut milk; a creamy potato and pea curry; tasty swiss chard stir fried with ginger and garlic; and a spicy dip with beans (canned of course), cumin, chillies and lime. With over 175 clear, accessible and simple recipes, this mouthwatering cookbook is as beautifully written as her bestselling Ultimate Curry Bible, and is fully illustrated throughout with gorgeous colour photography.

Whether you are cooking curry for the first time or have plenty of culinary experience and are looking for quick and easy recipe ideas, Madhur Jaffrey brings you all the tastes of India with the minimum of work.

This cookbook came highly recommended to me by one of my foodiest friends, but for a long time I hadn't really cooked enough from it enough (other than my favourite coconut rice) to write a personal recommendation. I have now made about a dozen of the recipes so I feel rather more qualified to set forth an opinion.

The clue to the book is in the title, and I would definitely agree that these are all straightforward recipes which try to simplify Indian cookery as much as possible. Most of the recipes are not time-consuming, nor complicated, although I don't recommend that you try EIGHT recipes for a dinner party (as I recently did). There are a lot of spices involved, as is true of all Indian cuisine, so you do need a pretty extensive spice cupboard. I would definitely recommend assembling them all before you embark on ANY recipe!

The format of this book is fantastic: simple, clear, easy-to read. Each recipe appears on a single page. There is a brief introduction which might touch on anything from the history/region of the recipe to the author's serving suggestions. The list of ingredients appears alongside the method. The font is large enough to please the visually challenged (ie, anyone middle-aged or older) and there is a really good use of white space. (There are good-quality pictures, too, for about one-third of the recipes.) All of this might seem straightforward, yet it's truly not. I have so, so many cookbooks which make hard work of reading a recipe as you are attempting to cook.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in Indian cuisine. It is the perfect introduction to this style of food, and the final chapter of the book - Spices, Seasonings, Oils & Techniques - gives the reader/cook a grounding in all of the basics.

Madhur's Curry Bible excited me but when it got down to it I didn't have the time to source all the ingredients or make the bloomin' dishes. The one dish I did make I loved so when I found she had created a practical fast and friendly curry book I had to get it and it doesn't disappoint. Good selection of dishes from meat, poultry, seafood and veggie, all doable in a few hours or less to rounds of applause from the family.

Another excellent book by the well known author.
Full of interesting recipes with good photos and guides.
The problem I have with this book, and many others, is the size.
This is a large format, fat book on heavyweight paper.
If you manage to clamp it open so you can read it while prepping and cooking, you've lost a considerable amount of work surface.
Why are they all so big ? Penguin books produced cookbooks for three decades in paperback size from the '60's to the '80's, OK, no photos in them but perfectly useable.
This book is £20, many are £25. Bookshops are full of such books discounted almost from date of publication.
A large number of my 2,000 + collection come from charity shops in mint condition as unwanted gifts and are sold at 10% of list price or less.
I'm beginning to wonder if people just don't want books of this size, particularly ones that you may only refer to occasionally.

because lentils with spices are a legitimately delicious meal. and if you learn to make curry in 62501 ways you will never ever ever be bored. the great thing about this cookbook is that the same spices etc show up again and again so once you've invested in them, the possibilities are ENDLESS.

however, i find myself tweaking ALL OF IT. mostly to add copious quantities of lemon juice because i'm like that.

Gibt einen sehr schönen Einblick in die indische Küche. Macht mir immer wieder Spaß darin zu blättern. Die zahlreiche Rezepte - meist bebildert - sind übersichtlich strukturiert und gut nachvollziehbar.

Rajastani Red Meat and Potatoes with Cumin and mustard seed are 2 particularly good recipes from this innovative book from Madhur Jaffrey.

The book is packed with interesting and unusual recipes not found anywhere else and gives you a true taste of the region.

Highly recommended.

Prachtig vormgegeven boek, mooie foto's en heldere recepten. Al vragen sommigen wel echt de hand van een goede kok om er wat van te maken.
