About the author

Author, naturalist and wildlife photographer Stan Tekiela is the originator of the popular state-specific field guide series and many easy-to-use identification guides for the U.S. Over the last 30 years he has authored around 200 field guides, quick guides, nature books, children's books, wildlife audio CDs, puzzles and playing cards, presenting many species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, trees, wildflowers and cacti found across the U.S. and in Canada.

Stan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural History from the University of Minnesota, and he has received national and regional awards for his books and photography. Also a well-known columnist and radio personality, his syndicated column appears in more than 25 newspapers and his wildlife programs are broadcast on a number of Midwest radio stations.

Stan leads instructional photo workshops and wildlife tours across the U.S. for both beginner and advanced photographers. He also gives detailed presentations about wildlife, complete with his award-winning photographs, to audiences of all sizes across the country.

Super useful guide for local birds, and somehow kept the attention of my son as a read-aloud book. He really likes birds. 🤷‍♀️

5 ⭐'s. Saw the first edition at a friend's and ordered the 2nd. Both are great! I love the easy color coded sections, photos of male & female plus in flight. The area maps and other info are great for any bird lover looking to learn. Kiddo loves it too!

I am new to bird watching, and basically purchased this book to help me identify the birds that are visiting my bird feeder. It is a great size, smaller than the average book you buy, and I love how it is organized. All you have to do is flip to the section of the appropriate color that is most dominant in the bird! I also like how the femals that are different, are listed seperately so that you can look them up easily as well. Birds that have different plumage during different seasons are also listed seperately so that it is always easy to look up a bird by its color. I have yet to know if it includes most birds, but so far...I haven't yet come across one I couldn't find in the book. I would recommend this book, at least for beginners! (more advanced birdwatchers might think differently)...

Lots of great pictures and descriptions of the birds. Using it as a primer for when we are in that area.
