If Jesus were a parent, would He use the same principles He used with His disciples? Exploring principles found in the Gospels. Hal Perkins helps parents put them into practice. He shows how to lead a child’s heart into obedience through a constant context of parental grace and honest. With illustrations on how to establish God’s truth – about Him, about right relationships, about abundant life—parents will discover how to empower their children to connect with Jesus and follow Him with passion.
Three stars is being generous since there is some good content in the book however the bad outweighs the good. It is clear he has a very traditional patriarchal view of the family and the church. Men should lead and disciple and women should be submissive. I am surprised and saddened that this is coming from a Nazarene pastor and being endorsed by other Nazarene leaders. An example of this would be page 205 where Perkins writes, “Pre-school mothers, you are with your children 24/7...” is this 1950?! I know more stay at home dads then moms currently. But there are many comments like this in the book. It is for that reason I could not recommend this book to others.
Great insights on how parents should disciple their children. I appreciate the passion and truth shared by the author in regards to the need for parents to be intentional with leading their children to Jesus.
“Love does what it believes to be the best for the one loved.”
If Jesus were a Parent by Hal Perkins is a comprehensive and practical book about discipling ones' children to become disciples of Jesus by inviting Jesus into the conversation that goes on in their minds night and day all their lives. Hal's principle strategy is to ask questions and to teach children to ask questions of Jesus. This book also teaches us the adults how to let Jesus parent our hearts whatever age we are. This is the story of how Hal and His family did life with Jesus and is a great inspiration to follow Jesus and teach others to follow Him. I know I will read this book again and again.
2/3 stars for some serious disagreement I have with his Arminian theology and our responsibility as parents to “make sure” our kids get saved.
5 stars for 90% of the content for how to develop a deep, strong, and loving relationship with your kids and teens, and very practically helpful how-to’s of discipleship of them. I loved most of this book!
This book has been a great blessing for me any wife. We read it together shortly after our first child was born. I highly recommend it for any Christian parents that are seeking direction regarding how to raise our children in Christ in the midst of a secular culture.
