In this commentary, Fred Craddock focuses on the text of Philippians rather than on conversations among scholars about the text. His commentary on the text differs from many other commentaries in that issues of authorship, date, place of writing, integrity, of purpose are dealt with at points where the text itself raises these issues. In order to assist those who preach, Craddock gives special attention to passages that appear in most lectionaries. Further, he draws attention to the theology of Paul as reflected in all of his letters wherever it enlightens or is enlightened by the text. Craddock helps the reader understand what it meant for an apostle and a church to be partners in the gospel. A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching is a distinctive resource for those who interpret the Bible in the church. Planned and written specifically for teaching and preaching needs, this critically acclaimed biblical commentary is a major contribution to scholarship and ministry.
The bottom line: A solid commentary on the book of Philippians with many teachable points.
Philippians Interpretation succeeds in extracting deeper meaning from this New Testament epistle from the writer (Paul) to the Philippian church.

I found Fred Craddock's commentary on Philippians quite helpful as I led a small-group study through the book. Craddock includes the strongest theories of other commentators before offering his own insightful opinions. I felt throughout that I was getting a good picture of current scholarly discussion without being distracted or overwhelmed by it. The book served as a useful counter to my usual go-to, the IVP Bible Background Commentary.
Brief commentary on Phillippians. Readable, and helpful in providing perspective on many issues that have been discussed over the years relating to the letter. Perhaps not the most pastoral book, I have read better arrangements to draw out devotional or preaching insights but still, a good read.
