Pretty unrealistic, honestly.
The subjects brought up were real ones, or could have been real under different circumstances. There are crazy people out there who feel they are charged with cleansing the earth of what they perceive as "filth." However, to have the crazy people increasingly stupid and redneck-ish, and to have followed Mason all the way from a big-time city to a small dinky town just to 'off' him is kind of ridiculous.

Add in the fact that everyone says fifty sentences to put across a ten-word idea/statement. Long, LONG paragraphs/pages were given to nothing but super-nice, considerate talk, even kind of from the bad guys. People have dramatic changes of heart, true love hits hard and unconditionally, everyone [except the bad guys] are essentially really really good people deep inside ...

Granted, I can take sweetness and love - and I do enjoy it under most settings - but this was cavity inducing.

And, my god, all the TALKING. I skipped over whole sections of writing where a person talked CONSTANTLY and yet NOTHING note-worthy was said. -_-;;

This was honestly painful to read. The dialogue and interactions between the main characters felt fake and forced. It was cheesy and predictable, and not cute/sweet romantic way. Such as, the main character Cole thinking he is attracted to Mason and then the next line of dialogue was something like "was he a pretty as you are?". As the sheriff, even one in a small town, Cole's character was very unprofessional. It all made the whole book unbelievable for me.

I’ve read a few of AKM Miles’ stories and I’ve heard even more wonderful things about them and I’m here to say that everything is true.

She’s a fabulous writer who draws us right into the characters and story; I also love the dynamics between her men, especially Cole and Mason.

Cole Winters is HOT; there’s something about a man in uniform that’s always kinda sexy, but Cole is also really cares for the people in his town. He’s big on looking after everyone and cannot stand bullies. And the Hawkins’ brothers are among the worst, especially when it comes to Judieanne, Cole’s very good friend who owns and runs the diner. This woman has a lot of class and how she manages to keep her cool when faced with the brothers’ ignorant behavior is a minor miracle.

Mason is completely over his head; ever since he saw something he shouldn’t have he’s been on the run and I’ll leave it to you to discover the what and the why. The what is heartbreaking and terrifying and the why, well that’s very neat. And Mason is much more than he first appears; of course to attract a man of Cole’s caliber he’d pretty much have to be. They’re very well matched and watching as their relationship develops is pure joy, sweet… oh and HOT!

There are some parts that can be difficult to read, but it all comes together in the end. And there are some, to me anyways, unexpected twists; AKM Miles’ has very ably combined mystery with romance and her book is filled with a wide variety of people. There’s a lot of personality brought to the fore; even the tertiary characters are well-developed. Cold Winters is rich in detail and emotion; joy and laughter vie with sorrow and hatred.

Miles’ had, once again, told a story that I’ll be more than happy to go back to again and again…but that doesn’t surprise me in the least.

When Mason Davenport sees something he shouldn't he ends up on the run for his life. From Chicago to the small Kentucky town of Deerville Mason is chased and finally caught by some very unsavory characters. Luckily he's rescued by the very man he'd come to find, Sheriff Cole Winters. Cole is an ex-Army buddy of Mason's brother and when they meet their lives will never be the same. As they try to find a way to catch the bad guys, help a family in need and keep order in the small town their attraction grows and soon both are hoping for more than just an easy fix to Mason's problems. With help from an unlikely source will they get the 'happily ever after' they're both looking for?

Cold Winters is a sweet, romantic, feel-good story. The protagonists are both likable, everyday men who are lonely but content, perhaps resigned is a better word for it, with their lives. There's an instant attraction and good chemistry between them from their first meeting and as the story progresses the author does a good job developing their feelings. Despite the bulk of the story taking place in a short period of time the story doesn't feel rushed. The sex scenes between Cole and Mason are well-written, hot and also tender and fit the protagonists well.

Aside from Cole and Mason there is a large and varied cast of secondary characters. There's the stereotypical redneck husband and father who almost loses it all before finally figuring out what's really important, a band of killers doing what they consider a service for the greater good and the sweet romance between a shy young deputy and the beautiful, restaurant owner with the heart of gold. These are just a few of the many characters in Cold Winters.

There's a lot going on in this story besides Cole and Mason's developing romance and AKM Miles handles it all quite well. None of the subplots eclipsed the main story instead they all blend together to create an interesting story. There is one major complaint I have with the story and that was that I felt two of the characters, Dodge and Ace, were too easily redeemed. They're first presented in a pretty bad light and so when they quickly turn into new and improved versions of themselves it feels unreal. The author did such a good job of making them unlikable in the beginning that it was hard to believe in their change.

Even with the overall sweetness of the story there is also a dark thread throughout. There are a couple of violent scenes, one of them was especially hard for me to read, and along with the narrow-minded, bigoted views of a couple of the characters made the story a bit uncomfortable to read at times. However, overall I did for the most part enjoy Cold Winters. This is a sweet, maybe a bit too sweet, story of second chances, new beginnings and the power of forgiveness. Those readers who enjoy these kinds of stories as well as fans of the author are sure to enjoy this one.

I go to AKM when I need sap after a dark read. When I need a toothache, I know I can count on AKM. Doesn't matter the level of ugliness in the book, the lovey dovey part always helps me.

This book though, kind of did something funny to me. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it, but I guess I just didn't understand it. I didn't understand why they would follow Mason to a small town. I didn't understand the quick turn arounds in attitudes. Nothing was really believable for me. I am not counting the insta-love, cause that always happens with AKM. I am talking about the other stuff. I didn't believe Jason would send Mason away. I didn't believe that those people would follow. I didn't believe the brothers had no idea what would happen. I didn't believe Dodge and his role of "new daddy". I think that's what took away the story from me. I needed to believe what was going on.

Festus was too damn cute :)

AKM will still be my go-to even if this one didn't quite work for me.

Perhaps it is me, but this one lacked something that I usually find in AKM Miles novels. Miles's novels usually can be relied upon to leave my smiling at the end, while taking a sweet, at times angst-filled, journey to love. This story had those elements, but for some reason I didn't feel it the way I usually do. This left me a little annoyed at times, by the seemingly over simple dialogues, while true love found its way. Thinking maybe it was just me, I re-read a few pages of another Miles novel, and found while there was definitely similar dialogue, the other novel still had more depth to it. Unfortunately, I can't say exactly why this is so, but I found this novel to be a little lacking. Not bad, but definitely not the same as the author's other work...

It had a good premise, and was played out alright - however, I believe it had the potential to be great book. Unfortunately the author seemed to almost want it to be over the top cheesy. It also seemed as though they drew out each separate thought of each character as far as they could. It gave me the feeling that the author was doing their best to make the book as long as possible without adding more to the actual plot. If I had not spent most of the book wishing the author would get to the point I would have enjoyed it a great deal more than I did.
