Hidden Depths

Rate this book
Barrister Tarn Buchanan is enjoying a rare, tranquil evening on the golf course when his concentration is abruptly shattered by the rude arrival of his exasperating former colleague, Fizz Fitzpatrick. She needs his help. An old friend of hers, Irene Lloyd, has disappeared. Also missing is a Rubens painting Irene had been working on. Fizz refuses to believe Irene is guilty of the theft. She and Buchanan investigate, and soon become enmeshed in a tangled web of intrigue. What exactly is going on at the stately but impoverished Abbeyfield House? Where had Irene's clandestine taxi journeys been taking her?

Tam Buchanan and Fizz Fitzpatrick have come a long way in one sense in that they have solved several mysteries together. At one time Fizz was just be beginning in her legal studies and now she is a Barrister. In another sense their relationship remains stalled and this is tedious because it is frequently one of the main focuses of the story.

Hidden Depths is the penultimate book in the series and the duo is looking for a long time friend of Fizz's who has disappeared along with a Rubens. The strong books are the early ones and I would recommend reading those again rather than this one.

This was my second novel by this author. The sleeve notes descibe her as having a low boredom threshold and I wonder if that is why I felt that there were important questions left unanswered just as there had been in her other book.(Missing Link)
The leading characters ( Fizz and Buchanan) are rather sterotypes of the chalk/cheese,rough/smooth, will they /wont they brigade but after saying all that, I found it an enjoyable and easy read.

When one of Fizz Fitzpatrick's old friends disappears, she turns, as usual, to Tam Buchanan. Tam hates the way Fizz manipulates him--if only her childish beauty really reflected her character! Irene had been working on an estate, doing art restoration, and a valuable painting seems to have vanished along with her. But Fizz is sure that Irene would not steal a picture for her own benefit. And she's not reluctant to break the laws that she and Tam are sworn to uphold to prove her point.
