David Seidman is a Los Angeles–area journalist, editor, and author who often writes nonfiction for teens. He comes to the topic of atheism with empathy for teenagers and for people in the religious minority, but he’s nobody’s advocate. He has written on topics as diverse as a US president, civil rights, teens in Iran, and holiday lights displays.
Through the 26 letters of the alphabet, the country, people, and traditions of Brazil are explored. From dances to animals, common foods, sports, and large industries, Seidman presents the information in short paragraphs of text, with boxes of “Fast Facts” to deepen students’ understanding of the South American country. By the end of the book, students will feel as though they have taken a tour of Brazil without ever leaving the classroom!
This alphabet book would not benefit early/emerging readers due to some of the challenging vocabulary and unique terms/Portuguese language, but it would be ideal for elementary readers who would grow their vocabulary, knowledge of geography, and reinforce letter/sound identification.
