The New Reference & Learning Guide for the Beginner Wiccan
In depth and current overview of the 1st Degree Studies A comprehensive guide for those people who are new to the Wiccan Way! Benson's book discusses what Wicca is and isn't, the five elements, the Wheel of the Year, Magick and spell crafting, ethics, philosophy, scrying, tarot, divination, tools, herbs, gems, and celebration of Wiccan holydays. She touches also on the different types of Wicca, the influence of Eastern ways on Wicca, and the ways in which Christians-and followers of other religions-have viewed this peaceful and oft-misunderstood way of life throughout the ages. The author also discusses the relative merits of practicing alone or with others, and what to expect should the novice attempt to join a coven. The complete beginner will be introduced to what it means to be a Wiccan, and what there is to gain from learning the ways of the ancients.

Other topics included in this guide are:
* Wiccan Names
* Sabbats
* Rituals
* Tea Leaf Reading
* Priesthood
* Why people choose this path and much more!

I don't think this is a good book for the beginner Wiccan or someone interested in the Craft as a religion.... Benson leaves a lot out and only barely touches on topics... the only thing she really even makes a dent in was the herbal section... which is ok if that's what you are looking for but to me there is a lot more to Wicca then Kitchen witchery. She barely even mentions the Wiccan Rede, which every seeker, student and teacher knows is the main ethics of Wicca. She also included spells in this book, which again really shouldn't be there for the simple fact that dabblers would get a kick out of it.I have read many books on many topics of Paganism and I have read a few that were lacking majorly in some areas. This book was one of them. I hope I didn't ruin anything for anybody.... but for someone like me who has studied a lot about Paganism and it's different traditions this is not one my favorites.

A basic guide for the curious about what the wicca religion really is. It puts to rest the ancient idea of witchcraft being evil.
There is an index of herbs in this book, a few recipes and some spells which are designed to attract energy. The author does warn that this is not a religion where you can be baptized and saved in a few minutes.
It is based on the ancient pagan religions. There are several forms of it. Still it takes years to learn and practice. Beginner, beware! Be very sure this is for you before diving into the murky waters!

I had this book for years and never sat down to read it, once I did I finished in about one evening. I wouldn’t say it was very helpful or beneficial as a starting Wicca practitioner. I found some of the paragraphs to be a bit assuming or judgy.
