Having read three creationist books on evolution this week -- and started a fourth -- I've come to realize that Henry Morris is something of a father figure in the field. He is referenced over and over, and after reading this book I can see why.

He does a great job of presenting a coherent case against Darwinism as it existed in the 1960s. I was impressed by his scholarly tone, so different from many later authors. Some of the science has moved on, rendering his examples and arguments less effective, but overall this is still a valuable resource for students of creationism.

AN EARLY WORK BY THE FORMER ICR PRESIDENT

Henry M. Morris (1918-2006) was one of the foremost biblical creationists of the late 20th century; he was also the author/coauthor of books such as 'The Genesis Flood: The Biblical Record and Its Scientific Implications,' 'The Scientific Case for Creation,' 'Scientific Creationism,' 'What Is Creation Science?,' etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1963 book, "For what a man believes about ultimate origins and about God's revelation concerning creation will inevitably affect his beliefs concerning destinies and purposes. The issue of evolution versus Biblical creation is most emphatically NOT a peripheral question. In view of widespread defections, in very recent years, of once-sound schools and other organizations to the evolutionary forces, it has become rather an issue of the gravest urgency. This little book represents an attempt to delineate this issue in terms of its ultimate implications and outcome."

Here are some additional quotations from the book:

"Furthermore, it ought to be evident that this universal law squarely contradicts, and therefore disproves, the evolutionary hypothesis, which maintains that 'creation'---that is, increasing organization and integration and development---is continually taking place in the present." (Pg. 33)
"It is hard to believe that the leaders in evolutionary thought, not to mention their hosts of uncritical followers, have ever really confronted this gross contradiction between their THEORY of evolution ... and the second law of thermodynamics." (Pg. 35)
"In fact, rather than honoring God's truthfulness by rejecting any supposed 'deception' on his part in creating apparent age, such men in reality are charging him with falsehood, since they deny the truth of his revealed Word concerning the creation." (Pg. 57)
"The water canopy also would have served as a highly effective shield against the many powerful and harmful radiations that surround the earth... It is quite possible that the healthful environment created by this great thermal vapor blanket was one major factor contributing to human longevity in those days." (Pg. 68)
"For example, there would naturally be a tendency for those sediments and organisms which occupied the lowest elevations before the flood to be buried deeper by the flood... The simpler, less mobile, smaller creatures would thus be caught and trapped first, whereas higher animals, and especially man, would often be able to retreat to the very highest points in the region before being inundated. This too, would mean that most men and higher animals would never be buried at all in sediments." (Pg. 73-74)
