English title: After The Abyss Dragon Woke Up
I randomly picked up this book, but I’m SO glad I did! It ended up being quite the unexpected gem of a find. There were so many hilarious and ironic moments that had me chuckling, something that I really appreciate in a book but can be hard to find.
The premise is that the MC, Shi An, is a powerful Abyss Dragon who went to sleep for thousands of years and woke up in a weak human body. He has no idea what happened, but his priorities are to 1) get his power and dragon form back, and 2) to make it back to his cave where all his shiny treasure is stored. While figuring out how to achieve his goals, he continues life as Shi An, and ends up enrolling in the magic academy. Over the course of the enrollment process, he cross paths with the ML, Mu Heng. He’s the last descendent of a line of prestigious dragon hunters and quickly takes an interest in Shi An.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
I’m a bit doubtful that a dragon as old and powerful as Shi An can be so naïve and innocent as he is, but it makes for a cute story. I loved Shi An’s character, he must be the laziest and most spoiled dragon ever. All he wants to do all day is eat, sleep, and play video games. There are so many good moments around this, like when he’s upset the butler didn’t let him pack his shiny gold outfit for school, or when he gets sick from eating 8 ice creams in a row because he has absolutely no self control. Eventually we learn that the only way to interest Shi An in anything is to either promise him shiny treasure or rewards. Even the reason he takes an interest in Mu Heng is because he’s very shiny with his silver hair and blue eyes, and from that point on he thinks of MH as his future collectible XP
It was hilarious to watch Mu Heng, who as I mentioned before comes from a prestigious line of dragon hunters, use his skills to “hunt” Shi An. Once he takes an interest in Shi An and recognizes what his feelings were, there was no way he would ever let Shi An go. He starts off small with baby steps, like letting SA hug him at night because his body is extra warm, moves up to small kisses which SA somehow thought was part of common social etiquette (like I said, he’s absolutely clueless), and then takes advantage of when SA is in heat to do more. And when SA tries to distance himself from MH, all MH needs to do is mention ice cream and SA is completely distracted and goes along with what MH says. I seriously lol’d when MH pretends to be the princess who’s willing to be ‘kidnapped’ by the big bad dragon, and instead he’s the one who’s actually controlling the relationship.
After SA’s identity as the dragon is exposed, I thought there would be at least some drama before SA and MH reconcile with each other, but somehow their relationship becomes even more domestic immediately afterwards. They start living together, and SA is spoiled rotten by MH. SA has shiny clothes to wear, the latest game consoles and video games to play, and all the delicious food he can ask for. He’s really living his best life as a captive dragon XP There’s a hilarious scene where some of MH’s subordinates visit him at home for the first time after they learn of SA’s identity, and they’re tense when SA exclaims and runs into the bedroom, but all he’s doing is making sure he doesn’t miss a new episode of a drama haha
There were so many hilarious moments. Here are some of my favorites:
Shi An’s poor roommate making all the wrong decisions to pair up with him during the third practical exam. He clearly didn’t realize their goals for the exam were completely opposite
When MH was telling Shi An that he's trying to hunt down a dragon, or when MH lets SA actually handle the dragon slaying sword
The black smoke demon being forced to be a pack mule for SA and also create satisfying dreams involving treasure, snacks, and video games
All the bickering between the human faced insect demon and the humanized Eye of the Abyss
Shi An taming the skeleton horse to obey him. Everyone else thought he was a goner and turns out he had completely subjugated the horse
The fact that MH keeps thinking SA is getting kidnapped by the dragon, not realizing that he *is* the dragon
Shi An’s sensitive tail and how completely clueless he is about why he feels weird when MH touches it haha
SA's first reaction to an injured MH is not to heal him but that it's the perfect time to turn him into resin for his collection XP
