In October 2002, David Bowie performed the New York City Marathon Tour. Five different nights in five different venues in each of New York’s five boroughs. It was a tribute to New York, and a tribute to his fans. For the first time in over fifteen years, he let a photographer follow him on tour, capturing a David Bowie we've never seen before.
About the Marathon Tour, Bowie writes, “The last time I came through the Northeast it was on the Area 2 Tour. We played in amphitheaters, which are usually a good distance from the major cities. Marathon courses are strategically planned to bring the runners to the streets. I would like to repay the fans that traveled so far to see me by bringing my show to them. But most importantly, I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates.”
David Live in New York is an intimate portrait of one of rock and roll's most exciting events of the decade.
Strictly for the fans. After a brief intro from the man himself, it is a photo essay of one of Bowie's last tours. He still looks fabulous, although it can be tough to tell as many photos are intentionally blurry. It is a somewhat annoying affectation by the artist (and what keeps this book from being a solid 5 stars). She also has a penchant for photographing shoes, close ups of wedding rings and other minutiae. It's her style and I respect that, although it does distract. Still, it's Bowie as an elder statesman of rock and its nice to see him on stage. This is one of the few tours I didn't see and I love it for that.
Photo essay that covers rehearsals, sound check, performances from a run of club gigs Bowie's band played in '02. This isn't a cultural-quake worthy Bowie period, visually - the appeal lies in the normalcy behind the scenes; normal people in normal rehearsal spaces, normal venues - the candid style of this collection places this subject of 'candid moment' front and centre.
And then the summoning of stage-presence come stage time, the execution of practice. Dark glasses and outfits at work. Normal people making quite incredible art. Really sweet and high quality collection for fans.
