Act Like We're in Love

Rate this book
When two people make beautiful music together onstage, can their love survive once the curtain falls? Linnea Larson is willing to do anything to keep her family's Minneapolis dinner theatre from going under. Anything, that is, besides accepting a date from the Hollywood hunk her father hired to inject a dose of star power into their production of Guys & Dolls. It's a toss up whether his greatest claim to fame is playing a superhero on screen, or a super stud off screen. Neither fact convinces her he's got what it takes to share her stage. And thanks to a life long pact with her best friend, she never dates actors.

Luke Powell has fame, fortune, and an endless string of women, but also a lingering dissatisfaction with his picture perfect life. Looking for a change, he escapes to his theatrical roots. What he finds are wary cast mates, a nervous best friend convinced the show will ruin Luke's career, and an adorable costar who stubbornly refuses to go out with him. Suddenly singing and dancing aren't the only challenges he'll tackle over the summer. Far from the spotlights of Hollywood, can he find happiness in the footlights of a tiny theatre?

Despite Luke dragging her into his daily paparazzi nightmare, Linnea can't deny her mounting attraction to his irresistible charm. And even if she's crazy enough to chance getting involved, their fling would have a guaranteed expiration date. He's leaving at the end of the run, and she's tied to her family's theatre. Why risk the inevitable heartbreak? Their job is to act like they're in love, but will they decide it's worth the leap to fall in love for real?

I received an ebook copy of this book for review from the author.

I have to say that this book really exceeded my expectations. I'm not a romance reader generally. Every once in a while I will read a romance, but usually that's a secondary factor to the story and not the main focus. I always worry that romance novels will be cheesy and embarrassing-by-proxy, meaning that I get so embarrassed for and by the characters that it makes the book less enjoyable for me. But I'm always willing to give a book a try, so I agreed to read this book and give a review, and honestly, I'm glad that I did.

I did have a few issues with this one. First, the ™ symbols after almost every brand name. Aquaman™, Google™, etc. This was pretty distracting to me, especially when it occurred in dialogue. I can see "Aquaman™" being said maybe once or twice to be ironic, but that wasn't the case. It felt more like CYA to me, and while I don't know the ins and outs of copyright law, I'm think that a blanket CYA on the copyright page of the book would be enough for all term uses in the content.

The only other big issue I had was some of the dialogue felt a little unnatural. For instance, during a hot and heavy make-out session that's quickly going places, I can't see the usually pragmatic main character Linnea saying, "You whip me into a frenzy!" Again, an ironic use would be funny, but otherwise I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that, ever. It just felt awkward to me.

But now onto the good stuff. Besides those two little nitpicks, I did really like this book a lot. The main characters were realistic and identifiable and interesting, and I liked them both quite a lot. I really loved Ingrid and Wes though, and for me, Wes made this book. He's the typical sidekick, but he's the Make It Happen Man, getting the short end of the stick while doing the lion's share of the work. One of his scenes literally made me shout with laughter, and that clinched him as my favorite character, right there. I love that.

There was a lot of humor in this book and I really enjoyed it for that. I also enjoyed the theatrical behind the scenes stuff. I thought a few things could have been resolved better, but overall this was a light, fun read, great for summer reading. Very enjoyable.

Such a fun book. I think my favorite thing about Act Like We're In Love was the great characters Ms. Barth created. From Linnea and Luke to Ingrid and Wes, the characters were great together and separate. I loved their banter, the fun and the heat between the romantic interests. And you get all of that set to the backdrop of putting on a performance of Guys and Dolls.

First a confession - I love plays and musicals, love the theatre, but I have never seen Guys and Dolls, but it was fun to get a feel for it from this book. I am now hoping to see it one of these days. So with that confession out of the way, know that the production takes a backseat to the romance. It's the vehicle for the two main characters to get to know each other, but it's not as important to know the plot of Guys and Dolls to read the book.

Ms. Barth does a marvelous job of introducing the characters and giving them plenty of situations for each of them to grow in. I loved watching the missteps that each would make along the way to their happily ever after. The dialogue and romance kept things moving along and there was never a dull moment. Act Like We're In Love had me laughing out loud at times and it made me feel that wonderful feeling like I was falling in love for the first time as well. I think Ms. Barth does a wonderful job with the emotions as well as the dialogue.

Great romance, good heat and a fun plot to drive the book along make this a 5-star book to me. I look forward to reading more by Ms. Barth. Her type of romance is right up my alley and she has a great knack for characters, humor and romance.

Act Like We're in Love is a wonderful contemporary romance. It is sweet, it is fresh, it is funny and very importantly: it is very well written!

The story is set in Minneapolis showing the life of a local (musical) theatre company whose routine is quite shaken up by an international movie star being cast in their latest production.

Linnea is the heroine, whose parents own the theatre. The theatre is going through some difficult times and to save its precarious financial situation the director of the company (Linnea's father) casts Luke a world famous action movie star to play the lead in their new production of Guys and Dolls. Most of the company is simply surprised and excited to finally meet and work with such a celebrity, but Linnea is quite hostile. First of all she is a bit hurt that her parents instead of discussing the theatre's situation with her chose to remedy it this way, secondly she truly fears that even if Luke is a good movie actor he won't be able to be a good stage actor and will endanger their production.

All characters, be it main or supporting are well created and interesting, Christi Barth gives them flesh and some characteristics even if they just pass through a scene. But the main four characters: Linnea, Luke, Wes (Luke's manager and good friend, also romantical hero for Ingrid) and Ingrid (dancer of the company, best friend of Linnea) are truly well developed (I even resented Wes and Ingrid some of their showtime, I would have loved to see more of Luke and Linnea, but that is just a personal preference :-p), fresh and three dimensonal.

Luke is so much more than a cardboard Hollywood movie star, and Linnea shows endearing vulnerability besides being a gorgeous and talented actress/singer. And then when these two get together, not spraks but fireworks fly! The chemistry between Luke and Linnea is so potent, the very first scene they meet, you will feel all tingly, Christi Barth does an amazing job conveying this extraordinarily powerful attraction and chemistry between these two! Every one of their interaction is full of life, teasing banter or sweet innuendos.

The romance is sweet and interesting, I loved how Christi Barth included other characters and aspects of the H/H's life and not focused only on developing the romance. I particularly enjoyed reading about the daily life of the company and how they prepare for the premiere, all these behind the scenes glimpses were executed with finesse keeping the reader enthralled in the story and loving the discovery of the mechanism of the theatre.

"Hey Sky, your mission doll's looking for you."

Luke loved getting to this point in the rehearsal process, when everyone called you by your character name. When the show took you so deep, you lived and breathed it. Almost as if the character you played was more real than you.

The sweet and sexy tone of the novel is peppered with humour:

"Nathan and Adelaide have been engaged for fourteen years at the start of the show. Can you imagine? I can't keep a woman for fourteen months. " Stu barked out a laugh, and his self-deprecating grin encouraged the circle of men to join in on the joke.

"I bet Luke's gone through fourteen women in a day," piped in a voice from the back. Catcalls snd whistles ensued. Luke buried his hands in his pockets and gave a who-me? shrug

"A gentleman never tells." Luke's voice dropped to a whisper. "But when I run out of fingers, I just stop counting for the night." A roar of masculine approval filled the hallway.

But don't fear, there is plenty of sensual too:

"Enough talk. I'm going to kiss you now," he whispered in her ear. "If you like it, i'll keep going. All night." Then he licked the rim down to the lobe, and gently bit down.

"I want my hands on you, Linnea. I'm going to discover you. What makes you happy, what makes you moan, what makes your eyes roll back in your head. Mostly I'm going to discover how good we are together." He levered himself up to look her square in the eyes. "If you don't feel the same way, you'd better stop me right now."

"Wow" she said and instantly regretted it.

I can only echo that: Wow... doesn't it give you those good kind of shivers?

And then there are all the heart-thundering, "aww" melting moments:

He picked up the pace, his long legs eating up the pavement. Temper pushed him faster till Linnea practically trotted beside him to keep from being dragged along. She flat-out pissed him off. Couldn't she see how difficult this was for him? Did he really have to spell it out?

"Listen to me. I don't care whether Mom wants to see you - which, by the way, she does. Don't you get it? I want her to meet you. It's important. Not to be polite. Not to torture you as payback for your parents breathing down my neck every day. But because you both matter to me, damn it!"

"Linnea, [...] how can you believe when I kiss you it's anything less than the best moment of my day?"

Verdict: Act Like We're in Love is an amazing contemporary romance! If you like your romance with an interesting background story, three dimensional quirky supporting characters and charismatic, powerful main characters, if you like your romance to be sweet, sensual yet funny, then Act Like We're in Love is the novel for you!

"When you see a guy reach for the stars in the sky, you can bet that he's doing it for some doll."

“Act Like We’re In Love” by Christi Barth… What a sweet story.

Linnea Larson is an actress who works mostly in her parent’s theater. Business is not good, so Linnea’s father Karl hires Luke Powell to play the lead in the theater’s production of Guys and Dolls in an attempt to draw in the crowds. Luke will play Sky opposite Linnea’s Sarah. He is a super mega movie star known for playing superhero roles in blockbuster movies. Not only that, but he has been voted the sexiest man in the world a few years running. He’s slick and he’s sly…until he meets Linnea. She has the ability to throw him off his game. There is an attraction there, but Linnea made a pact years ago with her best friend Ingrid to never date actors. They just prove to be too self-involved.

Linnea is a sweet character. When she meets Luke, she’s thrown for a loop. She is not impressed by his fame or his fortune. In fact, those things kind of turn her off. She can’t deny that there is a connection but she’s willing to try to ignore it. Luke is quite persistent though, and he has a few tricks up his sleeve. I really enjoyed reading Luke. He’s such a charming character that Linnea isn’t the only one who ends up drawn to him. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy yet he’s unhappy in his professional life. That is why he decides to go back to his stage roots for a short stint.

We are also introduced to Wes, Luke’s best friend and manager. He’s a tightly strung business man. And who is a good match for someone like that? Well, a dancer who is full of fun and life of course! Ingrid helps Wes find Luke a place to stay and the rest is history. It’s nice to not only have one, but two love stories developing in “Act Like We’re in Love”. Both are completely different, but each is very tender and funny. Ingrid is a hoot. So is Luke. Luke’s lines tend to be a little cliché, but they work for him.

This book centers around the actors and actresses before the opening of a big-ish theater production. You can tell that the author has a background in theater. The details she gives when telling of the actors before a show and the way they feel while on stage is wonderful. You feel as though you are a part of the show alongside Linnea and Luke. It’s almost like the production is a character all its own.

The dialogue in “Act Like We’re in Love” is delightful. Warm and engaging. Really great. There is not any real conflict in this book. It’s simply the story of people who meet and the circumstances surrounding how they fall in love. And even though you think you are 99% sure of where the story is headed, Christi manages to throw a few wrenches in your gears along the way. Especially the last few pages where she kind of throws you for a loop.

Overall, “Act Like We’re in Love” is a lovely book. It’s a character story involving likable characters you actually want to get to know. It’s a story that will make you giggle and leave you smiling.

Theatre

Luke is a big name movie star. Linnea is a theatre girl. He comes to town to do a play in her family theatre. But they meet by accident before she finds out who he is. Sparks fly, but will it last and not be a act.

Linnea Larson has an appreciation for the stage and theatrical arts. What she doesn’t appreciate are Hollywood hunks who storm into small towns and think they have the talent to sing and act on stage. Living above her family owned theater is Linnea’s idea of heaven and she can hardly contain her excitement as preparations begin for the theater’s next production of Guys and Dolls. Except Linnea discovers her new leading man is none other than Luke Powell, famous movie star and utterly gorgeous man. Linnea initially dislikes him, yet can’t help but melt every time he’s around. He can’t seem to ignore the sparks they make either, and the first time they sing together proves their attraction is irresistible. But Linnea’s life is on the small stage and Luke’s is on the big screen. Once the show’s run is over, will they stick around for a second run....or will the curtains close on their relationship forever?

It’s the contemporary romances that have a lot of heart that thrill you the most. The ones with the quirky, loving characters that all romance readers can relate to. Act Like We’re In Love by Christi Barth is one of those novels. A light hearted journey in the backstage of a theater romance, this novel is a fun, sexy and fabulous.

Act Like We’re In Love has two characters who create enough steam to knock your socks off. The sparks between Linnea and Luke are undeniably sexy and powerful. The pages certainly sizzle with their steamy kisses and playful games of seduction. After the heat dies down, this is what you will get with Christi Barth’s novel...it’s not a dramatic novel with villains and disaster, but a simple story that explains how two individuals meet underneath the bright lights of the stage.

As for the characters, although in some parts Linnea was quick to judge, I enjoyed her characters and personality very much. She wasn’t immediately falling all over him because he was a gorgeous celebrity, but only fell for him after she came to know him better. Of course, I’m sure Luke being gorgeous didn’t hurt either! As for Luke, some chapters I loved him and others he annoyed me somewhat. It was enjoyable to read a character who lived life in the spotlights of Hollywood, but didn’t conform to the negative image. Rejected the whole lifestyle, really. He has his imperfections, while most of them are endearing, sometimes the ‘womanizer’ image came on just a little too strong. It didn’t really mesh with the Luke the reader comes to know at the end...the endearing, caring actor who falls hard for this sensational stage actress.

Barth has fun and quirky secondary characters that light up the page. The secondary love story between Wed and Ingrid was as enjoyable as the one between Luke and Linnea. Their ending is a mystery and I can only hope their happily ever after is revealed in Barth’s future work. While most of the characters were fantastic, Linnea’s parents were a huge disappointment. For two people in an, for all intents and purposes, overtly happy business, they were dry and miserable and certainly not supportive of their daughter in any aspects of her life. Linnea had such a passion for her family’s theater and the stage but after getting to know her parents, it became difficult to understand why.

Act Like We’re In Love is certainly not an ‘edge of your seat’ adventure, but a charming contemporary love story. Readers will find a great story filled with witty characters, funny situations, and passionate romance all placed within the unique backdrop of live theater. Act Like We’re In Love is a very enjoyable read...one you will not regret trying!

Overall Rating: 4/5
Heat Level: 4/5

Act Like We’re in Love by Christi Barth
* I received this ARC free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Act Like We’re In Love by Christi Barth is such a fun read. Linnea and Luke are the perfect match for each other but every time things seem to be going their way something happens to knock things off course.

Linnea loves the theater more than anything and she is concerned when her father brings in a ringer for their production of Guys and Dolls to drive up ticket sales. Times are tough all over and Linnea’s family theater is suffering like everything else. She has some ideas to help revenue but her father doesn’t want to hear her ideas, he has everything under control.

After taking some time off to care for his mother, things have been “off” for Luke since he came back to the acting world. It doesn’t hold the appeal it once did for him. He doesn’t know what’s wrong and wants time to figure out what is bothering him. He gets his best friend/business manager to book him a stint working at a local theater so he can get back to his roots.

The characters are complex and interesting. Linnea is a diehard theater actress trying to save her family’s business. She and her best friend have a pact that they won’t date actors and she is determined to stick to it, even though Luke is very tempting. She loves her family but feels like her father doesn’t trust her with the theater and won’t listen to her ideas. Luke comes across as a playboy, love ‘em and leave ‘em type but there is definitely more to him than meets the eye. The chemistry between Luke and Linnea is instant and the sexual tension is evident from the beginning.

The supporting characters are a hoot. I love Ingrid and Wes too. They have great chemistry and play off of each other well. Ingrid is a free spirit that is just the right medicine to loosen Wes up and he makes her crazy because he doesn’t succumb to her like all her previous boyfriends. The scenery is fun too. I love the theater and the descriptions of everything tied to it. The back story is appropriate; it gives you enough information but doesn’t overload the story with past events.

One of things I loved about this story is that every time Luke and Linnea try to get together, something happens to mess it up, whether it’s a photo op for a politician or a conniving stalker. One of my favorite scenes was the scene at the ballpark when they are in the box. It’s the point Linnea realizes that she is falling in love with Luke and is willing to fight for him.

One thing that distracted me a little, but didn’t really take away from the story was the fact that there is more or less a sub story going on at the same time with Wes. He and Ingrid are really as much a part of the main story as Luke and Lienna and sometimes it was a little too much going on. I would like to see what happens to them after he starts his own agency, will she finally loosen him up and get him out of his high dollar suits?

Overall I really enjoyed Act Like We’re in Love and give it 4 flaming hearts.

Lena's Review

Linnea Larson has waited all her life to take over the family’s theatre. The problem is that before she can she has to do one more play. Not just any play but one that involves a real life Hollywood superstar. Linnea has seen many things as a Broadway actress but none like Luke. He is arrogant, egotistical and yet she is attracted to him. Linnea knows that this career changes of his is all a ploy. Luke is just another actor thinking to stoop low to increase his popularity. Or is he? All her friends say why deny the attraction and just risk it have a little fun. Yet can she really fall for a Hollywood guy like Luke without losing her heart?

Luke is a superstar and loves acting. The problem is that lately he is not feeling the same adrenaline he had before. He is looking for something different and somehow he knows that Linnea Larson is the perfect woman for the change. His whole goal has always been on his career no time for any romance. The thing is that there is something about Linnea that gets him going and he is having a hard time. His main love has always been on the stage not in front of a camera and Linnea doesn’t believe him. Luke knows the passion and chemistry is there from her kisses. Can he convince Linnea that his love is real and not all just an act?

Act like Were in Love by Christi Barth was definitely a great treat to read. Christi Barth has a way with comedy and romance all in one making it real. I loved how Linnea keeps denying the attraction even though you can tell right away they love one another. Now Luke is definitely an actor with goals in his mind yet once a beautiful woman like Linnea enters and he sets everything aside. Definitely a great read and can’t wait for more from this talented author.

My review originally posted on Romancing-the-Book.com is below:

This is the second book I’ve read by Barth and I wasn’t disappointed. This book had romance, laughter, some tears, lots of conflict and was able to hold my interest from the first pages. A large part of the story took place in the theater and although I don’t know much about that world it was easy to envision yourself there as the story unfolded. Between the rehearsals, costuming, the myriad of characters involved in one part of the theater or another and through to opening night you felt yourself a part of the energy and even the tension that surfaced at times. You could also smell the cosmetics, feel the heat of the lights and hear the back slapping and applause. The friendship between Linnea and Ingrid was portrayed realistically and you could feel the emotions they felt whether it be happiness, disbelief or just support they gave each other. Luke and Wes thought they were friends as well as business partners and associates but Wes was
frustrated easily by Luke’s actions and very often only thought of himself. I especially liked the ending which gave me the happily ever after I was hoping for but didn’t think would actually happen. My only disappointment was that the story seemed to end so abruptly. A few more pages would have been nice. This was an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading other books by this author in the future.

This was a new author for me, and yes I am addicted. This book had been sitting in my review pile for almost 2 months and upon getting my e-reader it was number 2 on my list to get read. Well, it should have been number 1, this book was great. I love contemporary romance and this fits it perfectly. I also love when there are two stories in one book. Not only did the reader want to see Linnea and Luke get together, but each of their best friends Ingria and Wes who were complete opposites were drawn to one another. Since we didn't get as much with the two of them, I am hoping that means the author is working on a book for just those two characters. As always, one thing I look for when reading romance is the chemistry between the characters. I have to feel the want between the two, and I definitely did in this book. Linnea was so drawn to Luke and he the same. It was one of those books where the two main characters struggled with being together, but not to where you want to throw the book across the room and tell them to just get over it. The author really balanced it well. The characters were all well liked. This is a book your going to want to read if now a days romance for you. Especially when just watching a movie and wishing you could land a big movie star, reading this you can be with Linnea as she gets her chance to bag the hottest name is Hollywood.

During the first 25%, I wanted to DNF this multiple times as being stuck in the h's head was driving me crazy. Much felt forced. The relationship with the H also felt a bit forced but it did get better towards the end.

One thing that drives me crazy with some female authors is that no matter how bad things seem, the guy can "exude his sexuality" and the woman will give in and "forget" why she is upset. In my mind, that doesn't bode well for the relationship as it is driven by sex instead of the relationship.

Not ordinary

I don't usually read "romance" books they're way too predictable and often just repeat the exact same paragraph in multiple chapters. That being said, I tried this story because I am such a theatre nerd, my favorite place backstage.
Also , there are some very steamy sex scenes!
Yeah, there is the usual "happily ever after", but lots of the theater drama and anxiety to keep me turning pages.

Cute read.

When a big time actor decides to return to live theater, he joins a cast in Minnesota. Only his costar isn't thrilled to be his flavor of the month only for him to return to Hollywood when the play is over.

She genuinely falls in love with him. But little does she know that he feels the same way about her.

Lights, camera, action! Act Like We're In Love is an interesting story, but takes a while to kick off and generate interest.

The first situation is one we've seen before. Linnea is literary swept off her feet by Luke, who is obviously someone famous, though she initially doesn’t realize.

However, as I read on, the plot slowly developed into something more and the somewhat stereotypical characters grew on me. Nonetheless, the author does become a bit repetitive on how fabulous Luke is and how fantastic his kisses are. The descriptions, though are well composed and sweet (along with spicy at the right moments), and the novel has some great humorous moments (Luke’s manager, Wes becoming angry was hilarious) as well as some very witty dialogue. Those were the things that kept me turning pages.

The secondary characters were well managed, though the way the relationship between Ingrid and Wes was heading, they could have gotten a novel to themselves (actually that would have been quite interesting).

The best thing about Act Like We're In Love is without doubt the theatre-like feeling I got while reading the novel. Loving theatre and having had the chance to be part of the backstage, I really felt the nerves, the preparation, the gossip, and the theatre jokes that run throughout the novel.

Although the ending was a bit abrupt after everything the characters went through, it was well thought out and very endearing. Act Like We're In Love is a sweet, cute read that will leave you feeling happy and satisfied.

Could not finish. It was tedious. The characters and dialogue didn’t draw me in.

STORY BRIEF:
Famous rich movie/TV star Luke wants a change. He goes to Minnesota to star in a local stage play of “Guys and Dolls.” From the moment he sees Linnea he pursues her. Her family owns the local theater. Her father is the director. She is the female lead in the play. At first she doesn’t think Luke will be talented enough to work on the stage as opposed to “before the camera.” Also she fears he won’t be able to sing well. Also she is mad at Luke because the paparazzi took a picture of her (when she was with Luke) when she had no makeup on and was sweaty from exercise.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
The plot seems to be he loves her, he shows her he can do all this stuff, and the main question is what will he do at the end when he is supposed to return to his California life. It felt like everyday conversations among various local people. No interesting dialogue. I read 49% of the book. I was bored. Nothing interested me. The thought of continuing to spend time reading this was painful. So I skipped to the end of the book and read the last 20 minutes to see if it might entice me to read the rest. It did not.

Linnea Larson basically grew up in the theater. Her family owns one and she loves acting. She's greatful she isn't famous though, she couldn't handle all of the parparazzi and all that goes with it. She made a pact years ago with her best friend that she wouldn't date any actors.

Out rollerblading one day, she literally bumps into a handsome man. Even after the introductions are finished, she quickly agrees to dinner with him. He has quickly caught her attention. But when he realizes she doesn't really know who he is, he rectifies the situation. Luke is very famous, known as the Aquaman, as well as been in several movies. He's wealthy, famous, and a hunk.

But Luke is ready for a break from the limelight and gets the part playing in Larson's production of Guys and Dolls. His leading lady is Linnea, and she still refuses to date him, even though the two are supposed to be acting like they are in love. The paparazzi find Luke no matter where he is, but can Linnea put aside her pact to give she and Luke a chance at real love?

Exciting and heartwarming, Act Like We're in Love is a delightful contemporary romance that will touch your heart. Beautifully enhanced with a poignant plot, compelling characters, humor, romance, striking plot twists and plenty of love, this story is brought to life right before your eyes by the attractive writing style of Christi Barth.

A really fun read! A funny, determined heroine! A hot, deeper-than-he-looks kind of hero! A wonderful family-run theatre makes a terrific setting for this delightful, charming romance. This would make a fantastic book for your summer beach reading.
