The Promise

Rate this book
In 1746. eight-year-old Colleen Stuart was more than ten-year-old Jonathan Rodes' playmate -- she was his best friend. She could do anything a boy could do and best of all, she could play jokes on the adults without getting caught. Jonathan assumed they would always be together, but no sooner had his father told him the secret of the jewels, than his world collapsed. The King's men executed his father, his ailing mother died and he found himself painfully separated from Colleen. For years he remembered his promise to find her, but it seemed hopeless until one day an odd letter arrived.

For a free ebook, this was okay. The story was tolerable, though by the end I just wished it would get over. There was a lot of telling rather than showing. I wanted to scream at the editor, or lack thereof, several time. The plural of Carsons is Carsons, not Carson's. The text was riddled with misspelled words, incorrect word choice, etc. If you want to give me a free sample in order to entice me to buy more books in the series, make sure you do basic editing.

It was an okay book, but I really just got so bored of it that I stopped reading it. I don't think I have that short of an attention span, but I don't know. I liked the beginning of it a lot, but the rest isn't really working out.
