Disappointing book. I expected more of this author. It's all about a joke machine. That's an exciting idea; however the children were very disappointed that the book didn't contain a single joke! So everytime it talked about the joke machine spitting out an hilarious joke the class was primed to hear the joke. But not a single one. So as a kids' book this just didn't work for me or the class.

Everything Alexander McCall Smith writes is good, but this children's book is especially good. His ability to combine adventure, mystery and morality is superb.
