Looking for a biblical counseling resource for those who are single parents? I recommend this booklet that is one of the titles in the minibook series published by New Growth Press. The series is authored by various counselors from the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF). The author Robert Jones is a biblical counseling professor at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. It was a worthwhile resource for Biblical and Pastoral Counselors for any single parent. I see at this time that this booklet is only available electronically. I wish the publishers would make hard copies available given the massive need for this today with the numbers of single parents.
The booklet begins with a section on how important it is important for a single parent to view themselves primarily with their identity in Christ and not just as a “single parent.” There is a good way to begin biblical counseling! The second section is on resolving issues related to single parent status then the next is on clinging to God’s special promises to widows and those who are fatherless. About halfway through the booklet there’s “Practical Strategies for Change” that encourages single parents to follow the basic biblical counsel given to all parents, paying attention to the child’s response to having only a single parent, pursuing a positive relationship with the child’s other parent and participate in your local church. Jones also encourages believers to expose their children to other mature Christians as good role models and he exhorts single parents to also seek biblical counseling if they are considering remarriage.
The discussion about identity in Christ was very very good! I thought it was good that the author said one’s identity in Christ is so paradigm shifting that a believer who is a single parent has more in common with an unmarried Christian or a two parent Christian than even with a nonbelieving single parent. That is the implications of the doctrine of our identity in Christ and I never heard anyone say it that way before. Powerful! I wished the author could have unpacked more the discussion on resolving issues related to single parent status but I realize that topic can be another whole booklet! Still what I appreciate is the many facts and angles Jones brought up for single parents to consider such as the child’s handling of having a single parent or divorced parents and also issues to consider with the topic of remarriage. I found this helpful as a resource for discussion as a biblical counselor with someone that is a single parent.

Another pamphlet by Dr. Jones, he does a good job of balancing practical application and answering common questions while maintaining a sympathetic and compassionate tone. The content seemed more straight forward than his other mini-books, but I think it was the topic and not his writing.

My pastor recommended this resource to me and I ended the year reading it, then began this year reading through it again - and taking notes along the way. Such a great and short read for single parents in the day in and day out of parenting their children without a spouse!

The booklet does not strive to be everything for everyone but does achieve its goal in providing practical Christian advice on how to lead your life under such circumstances.
