Sex, Love, Betrayal: It all begins with An Unexpected Obsession.
At thirty-five, Ava Scott has settled nicely into her quiet life. Successful author, college professor, what does it matter if she doesn't get out much? Passion really is overrated, isn’t it? Everything in her life is running smoothly until Cameron walks into her classroom.
Twenty-five and the hottest movie star to hit Hollywood in years, Cameron Sloane has it all; Looks, fame, women, money. So why does his life feel like just another role he’s playing? Can a chance encounter with a shy bookworm awaken his sleeping heart?
Can Cameron break down the carefully constructed walls Ava has built? Can Ava survive Cameron’s overwhelming fame and having her life exposed in the tabloids?
This novel had SOOOO much potential but was stunted and derailed around the halfway point! The setup was one of my favorites...unknown "normal" gal meets insanely hot and famous author and they fall in love, great, right? But here's the kicker the author made it even more interesting by making the heroine 35 to the hero's 25! Plus the heroine is accomplished and wealthy in her own right. I enjoyed these additions, and I adored that Cameron (the hero) was absolutely Gaga over Ava (our beautiful author and teacher). Of course there had to be obstacles, those happen, and I was ready for them...but sadly these obstacles changed the ENTIRE FEEL and "reality" or should I say suspension of reality, that the book went so downhill that by the end it was completely tanked and the characters unredeemable in my opinion. Cameron's brother is his manager/agent and he's the worst sort of villain. He's a total sleaze that resents and hates his brother while pretending to have his best interests at heart. He does everything in his power to make his brother miserable and to drive Cameron and Ava apart, in fact succeeds several times and yet Cameron KEEPS HIM ON as his manager saying it would be too much trouble to replace him.... I mean, come on!!! And Ava supports this decision by saying "he's family, we can't break up family." Another big, hello, for a smart lady you sure are stupid. So you lose total respect for both of them, but mainly for Cameron and his big declarations of love. It gets worse though!! After telling Ava I can't live without you...he continually drives her away OR breaks up with her...and gives stupid excuses!!! The author had set him up to be this amazing superhuman hero who would DIE for her he loves her so much, but then basically tears that entire character personality apart with the actions in the second part of the book. Also the studio has Cameron locked into contract to date his co-star and again instead of telling them to go and shove their contract where the sun don't shine, he uses it as a reason to a) break up with Ava b) drive her away c) be away from her when she MOST needs him ahem, being in the family way, anyone? Maybe in real life a movie star wouldn't throw away all that money and possibly be sued etc., but this is a ROMANCE where the hero has been set up as the end all be all I LOVE YOU TO DEATH FOREVER guy, in this reality he should not be a puppet to anyone! I was mystified, I kept wondering where that shy, adorable, endearing, handsome Hollywood hunk went, the one who kept saying over and over that he couldn't live without her. And Ava...she was this kickass heroine, feisty, GORGEOUS, rich, smart, able to acclimate to his crazy life and kept him in check, and yes, rightfully so she ran when the sh*t hit the fan...but after that moment she became a total pushover! The moment she admitted her undying love to Cameron it became "hey lets not make waves in Cameron's life," and "oh you can have a fake torrid romance with your costar while I pine away for you over here," and worst of all "sure people and strangers and the press heck my own friends are calling me horrible names, think I'm a home wrecker that I'm sleeping around that I'm a cougar, and a gold digger, and say as much when they pass me, but that's fine, because I know that after 8 months more you will come home to me...." aweeeeee how sweet, I almost puked a little in my mouth. Seriously?!?! What self respecting woman would accept that load of crap?? And what man worth a dang would make her accept it?! Yes, I was really upset that a book that showed so much promise ended up being such a pile of rubbish. I honestly want my money back, and I have rarely felt that!
This book was fantastic!! I had my doubts and I will tell you them so if you have some of the same concerns you know they are unfounded... At first I was worried to read it because I have not heard of this author before... But let me tell you I will be buying her next book the DAY it comes out... Another concern of mine was how good it was going to be... I saw that it was only $3 on kindle and thought that it was either going to be really short or suck... I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was neither... I was long and fabulous....
The book had everything I love... It has a involved best friend of the heroine and they were hilarious together... The guy (Cameron) was hot and so sweet... Him and Ava were a great couple... Their chemistry literally leaped off the pages... It was kind of a love at first sight thing and even if you don't personally believe in that, it was totally believable...
This book may not be for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed it... I suggest that everyone give it a chance... I definitely recommend this book!!! ENJOY!!
Ok, here's the thing.... This book was a sweet, short & simple read for me, as soon as I was able to get over the "Love/Lust-At-First-Sight" part of this story... What can I say, I'm more into slow & steady sort of relation-building... But apart from that,it was a cute story... Yes, it felt a lot like Tina Reber's Love unscripted, but I guess that's because I read Tina's book first...Over-all it was a fun-read.
I had every intention after finishing My Double Life to go onto The Hunger Games, but n Unexpected Obsession was recommended to me on GoodReads and I was drawn in. Because honestly what every-day girl doesn’t think about what would happen if she ran into her favorite male celebrity?
Right away I loved the character of Ava Scott. She’s smart, successful and can make some really witty remarks, pair her with her best friend Scarlett and well I had myself wishing they were my best friends. Cameron Sloane is also very likeable, as well, he’s Hollywood’s It Boy with a heart of gold. Ava and Cameron’s relationship is very believable as the book progresses, especially in the late middle chapters. Everything doesn’t magically fall into place with them and they do have to face many struggles to be together.
I did have a few issues with the book but they weren’t enough to distract me from the story. Ava’s outfit for the GQ party seemed a bit too far-fetched for something she’d wear. I could understand her buying it on a whim at a trunk show, but couldn’t picture her wearing it outside of the house on any day but Halloween. I felt as though Scarlett was an under used character and really only there for Ava to complain to or gossip with, I really wish more was done with her. At the end of the book I realized that everything with Cameron’s brother could have been easily fixed with a conversation explaining what his brother was doing what he did but this would have taken much away from the book. Which his actions did make for some page turning suspense.
Overall, I really enjoyed An Unexpected Obsession. While I’m much more of a YA fan, I really got into this storyline. Heidi Hall took a storyline that’s often featured in cheesey books and movies and turned it into a believable and page turning read. I’d love to see a made-for-TV movie, which stays true to the book, made for this story. For the readers out there who wonder what could happen if you ran into that celeb you have a crush on, I highly recommend An Unexpected Obsession. I will certainly keep an eye out for more releases by this author!
This was a good book, I'll admit it. I enjoy the movie star meets small town girl books. Cameron Sloane was edible. There were some things, however, that didn't add up to me:
1) When she left him after walking in on him and his costar, he couldn't handle it, triggered her alarm, almost got arrested, told her he couldn't live without her, literally had a meltdown, etc.
2) But when it came down to the studio possibly suing him for breach of contract because he was with Ava, he was able to break up and leave her without a problem at all. Somehow it was okay then because it concerned money and he listened to the people around him. When it came down to that fact that he would possibly never make another movie after being sued and would have to pay back large sums of money to the studio, then it was okay to walk out on Ava. And he did it on a PLANE. So very wrong. I was like REALLY? SERIOUSLY?
3) You aren't told that Jackson is an African American man until the end of the story. Maybe I missed that but I don't think I did.
4) Cameron hired his slimy brother, Geoff, back as his manager. Now that REALLY threw me. With Cameron knowing all that he did to him and Ava, drugging him on purpose, breaking into Ava's apartment in London, stealing her journal with all that private information about her and Cameron's relationship, he still hired him back. He should have had him arrested instead. That was dense.
I found An Unexpected Obsession by Heidi Hall on some random Amazon list and it was an unexpected surprise and great vacation read. Especially after reading Captive In the Dark by CJ Roberts - another amazing read if you are in the mood for deep and dark. I liked this book. It's *VERY* similar to Tina Rebers Love Unrehearsed and Love Unscripted (which I really liked). Loved Ava....She was real, independent and smart.
She thinks she's a dull professor who'll never land the hot actor. Duh. This book was a perfect blend of real story telling and hot sex. I woke up at two in the morning, Monday...decided to read. I gobbled this up in four hours. By the time I get to acknowledgments, I was left thinking...'there has to be more!'
This is my own book, but I would love to have people download the free chapters from Amazon and give me some feedback. I didn't add a rating because I want to hear what you think...I already know that I love it;)
This book was so good from the very beginning it draws you in. Ava and Cameron are off the hook and if Hollywood is really like how they are to Cameron that's just wrong and the villain in this book is Cameron's own brother Geoff. Talk about drama and romance!
