Jed Mercurio is a British author; TV and film producer and (non practicing) medical doctor.
He also writes under the name John MacUre. He created the television series Cardiac Arrest, Bodies and the sci-fi miniseries Invasion: Earth (1998). Bodies is based on his novel of the same name and earned him two BAFTA Television Award nominations and two RTS Award nominations. He has also written and directed for The Grimleys (and wrote the pilot episode).
Before turning to writing, Mercurio trained as a doctor at the University of Birmingham.
Loosely based on Shackleton's epic expedition to the South Pole in the 1911, this story follows the adventures of a motley crew of penguins who follow in Shackleton's footsteps (at least the penguin version of those footsteps) on a roundabout journey from Penguinville towards the South Pole.
Mercurio uses dialogue very effectively to develop unique personalities for each of the characters and fills each part of their adventure with plenty of silly humour. This book has quite a bit to say about climate change too, i.e. the intense warming of Penguinville due to reckless industrial development that is destroying the ozone layer, making it a potentially good introduction for children who may not usually engage in school science lessons.
