One Wore Blue

I finally got around to reading Kiernan and Jesse’s story.

Kiernan disappointed me so very much in this book. She is anti-slavery, but still deathly loyal to the Confederates. Her reasoning, what I gathered was that, Yankees have no right to take away their choice. Which sounds reasonable, except when the choice in question involves taking another person’s choice away. What I mean to say is that, she thinks the Southern states should be given a choice to stop slavery. But what about the rights of people who are enslaved? Where is their choice? She also argues that they will eventually stop it. Well eventually isn’t good enough. Injustice was happening then and there, it shouldn’t have been happening anyway. It should have been stopped the day it began. I really couldn’t relate to her character. There was a scene where a “master” beat his slave, and even after seeing the injustice of that, she still sides with the idea of giving them a choice.

Although nothing much of my knowledge on that war has changed since when I read the second book, I found it impossible to excuse such reasoning even though there were holes in my knowledge.

Another thing I didn’t like about Kiernan was how she strung along Anthony. She says that she doesn’t want to hurt him, that he didn’t get her subtle hints. But he waits for her for years. She is worried that she will hurt him, what about when he finds out that she loves someone else after the years he has waited. I just found that really selfish. It was as though she kept on putting off telling him because she wanted to have her options open, or she herself for her own reasons didn’t want to have an awkward conversation with him.

And what she does with those sick Yankees resting in her home was just despicable…

It wasn't good enough that she is against the idea of slavery but that she is allowing others the option to pursue slavery,

I wished that Callie in the second book had more of Kiernan’s anger and stubbornness.

I wasn't sure when I began this book how I felt about it. I like reading late at night and don't like images of Civil War battles in the forefront of my thoughts as I go to sleep. But I stuck with it and it turned out to be a really good love story. Kiernan is a Southern Belle who has grown up with Jesse Cameron and his family in a neighboring Virginia plantation. As war breaks out, Jesse sides with the Union and against the rest of his family and Kiernan. But she never stops loving him and the war doesn't destroy that. It's a bit complicated but it has a very nice (but unfinished) HEA.

One Wore Blue by Heather Graham (1991) is the first book in the Cameron Saga Civil War Trilogy, and one of the finest HR books written around this national tragedy. It was an emotional journey again thru this book … a longtime favorite plus I spent most of my life in northern Virginia surrounded by reminders of the Civil War … battlefields, names, monuments and places.

Heather Graham’s engrossing story cuts to the heart of this time that divided not just a nation but families. Jesse Cameron and Kiernan Miller grew up on their families Tidewater plantations … along with siblings, all childhood friends. Jesse, ten years older than Keirnan, is a West Point graduate and military doctor who sympathizes with the North while she is devoted to the South. Then war breaks out.

The story takes them from Harper’s Ferry where she is staying with family friends … he rescues her from the mobs… thru their bitter and passionate struggles across Virginia … Manassas, Richmond, battles, wounded, field hospitals, family and friends tragedies.

This is one of those really good books that sweep you away with three dimensional main characters .. both fierce, loyal, independent and passionate about their beliefs. They burned for each while Keirnan hates all Northerners and considers Jesse a traitor to the cause. It’s a highly sensual read… first of four steamy luscious sex scenes is on page 100 and lasts for seven pages… I truly felt like a blushing fly on the wall watching them!

In another recent post someone mentioned Ashes in the Wind by Kathleen Woodiwiss as another great Civil War book … so I’m taking a detour and reading that now before moving onto the next book in this series, One Who Wore Grey.

Love love the brilliant stepback by Sharon Spiak … a dashing sexy man in a uniform … much better than the sweet cover.

This novel of the Civil War is the first in a trilogy about the Camerons, a wealthy Virginia plantation family who find their loyalties divided when the Civil War breaks out. Most of this novel is told from the point of view of Kiernan Mackay, the spirited and beautiful neighbor of the Camerons who has loved the oldest Cameron brother, Jesse, for most of her life. Time and circumstances finally collaborate to get this couple together, but their bliss is short-lived when their beloved Virginia secedes from the Union and the lovers find themselves on opposite sides of the divide and neither is willing to compromise on their convictions. Jesse, an army surgeon, rides off to the North, leaving Kiernan behind in the little town of Harper's Ferry, which is about to find itself in the middle of a tug-of-war between the Union and the Confederacy. But war has a way of tearing people apart and throwing them back together in dramatic fashion, and as the bloody conflict rages on, Kiernan and Jesse begin to question their ideals, their loyalities, and their feelings for each other. This novel borderlines on being a bodice-ripper and it is a bit on the melodramatic side, but it's delicious and well-researched and I couldn't put it down. I've already put the next book in the trilogy on my wishlist.

On a side note, another reason I enjoyed this novel so much is that I've visited Harper's Ferry in my travels and really liked the little town and I thought the author did a great job of recreating it in her novel. If you're interested, check out the post I wrote on Harper's Ferry as part of my Time Travelers feature.

I should not read this stuff.

First, the author abuses the word "tempestuous" which is both on the cover and then in descriptions of Kiernan about every 20 pages. The reader is advised to replace "tempestuous" with "spoiled" because it makes more sense.

Second, I am on page 200 and Kiernan, who has by now turned 18, is so against giving up slavery- or State's rights, it's hard to tell- that she has decided to never forgive the 28-year old Army doctor who believes that the Union must prevail. He's a Southerner! Born in Virginia! He isn't allowed any other point of view. She wants tobacco and cotton and slavery to go on and on, although maybe someday slavery could end if they could figure out how to get cheap enough labor....

By page 200, there have been two black people identified. One is a freedman who chose to remain on her daddy's plantation. Another is Jesse's butler, a man named Jigger. I kid you not.

These people are so one-dimensional. She has her pride and she likes sex in empty cabins. Anthony likes her. Christa likes somebody in Book Three. Kiernan's daddy likes Virginia and drinking and understands that his daughter kinda sleeps around. She likes telling people what they should believe.

This story is so flat. It makes me tempestuous.

I have a lot of feelings about this book...

First things first, Graham's writing really was beautiful and eloquent. The sexy scenes within this book are BREATHTAKING!!! The amount of tabbing and highlighting that happened was amazing. If the writing hadn't been so superb, there is a good chance this read would have been a DNF, not a finished book.

My main complaint: Our heroine, Kiernan, made herself unnecessarily happy for the sake of drama in this book. This is a childhood friends, to enemies, to lovers story. Kiernan refuses to marry or be with the love of her life, Jesse, because he sides with the north, and not the south during the Civil War. Outside of that, they both love each other deeply. She chooses to marry another man, Anthony. (Poor Anthony got the raw end of this deal.) They marry, and he immediately goes off to war, and then DIES!!! (She is named a widow on the back cover, so this shouldn't be a surprise.)

Jesse on the other hand, is frustrated that him siding with the north is the only thing keeping them apart. He does everything he can to protect her and her family from his place in the war. When the north invades the area which she lives, he makes sure they use the home she is in as a field hospital instead of burning it down. He does everything he can to protect her, and stay away from her, because he is so in love with her, he has a problem keeping his hands to himself.

Their love story had epic moments, yes. Do I think that they could have worked through their differences in an easier to digest way, yes. Do I understand why the author chose this way instead? To an extent, yes.

She dedicated this book to the people who lived in this area, and it seems these stories were passed down through generations, and she decided to write them out. Do I think the real life things happened this dramatically? NO! Do I wish that Kiernan weren't so frustratingly stubborn? YES! Will I read another Heather Graham book? HECK YES I WILL! I just don't think Kiernan was the heroine for me. Jesse was great, and young Daniel started to steal the show for a little while! Love him!

Enthralling Civil War Romance!

This is the first in the Cameron Saga Civil War trilogy (and follows the Cameron stories told in Graham's North American Women trilogy). I highly recommend the whole Cameron Saga--all 6 books. They are rich in history, well-told romances with amazing detail, seamless dialog and a family of wonderful men and women you will love.

This story begins in 1859 with the Harper's Ferry incident involving abolitionist John Brown. Jesse Cameron is serving as a doctor for the federal troops under Jeb Stuart and his younger brother, Daniel, is serving under Robert Lee. They have grown up with the beautiful and independent Kiernan Miller in Tidewater, Virginia. Kiernan loves Jesse and is good friends with Daniel and their sister Christa. As they sense the approach of war, Jesse cannot abide a nation divided, but Kiernan is a loyal rebel, a Virginian who, like Daniel, supports the Confederacy. Jesse will choose to wear the Yankee uniform to support the Union, and though Kiernan loves him and has given herself to him, she will marry another, a loyal reb she does not love.

Right there, Graham had me. My heart was dying. Jesse was like all the Cameron men before him (see North American Women trilogy): tall, dark and handsome, strong, committed to the cause of liberty and truth--and capable of deeply loving his woman while brooking no rebellion. Ah...a real man. I wondered what Kiernan was thinking when she refused to marry him. I wanted to slap her several times. But alas, she was a blind rebel.

You will laugh and you will cry with this one, as you become a part of the lives of young people who were swept into the war that tore apart a nation and tore apart families...a time that shaped America. The ending is exciting, too. Graham has produced a series of keepers!

Here's the whole Cameron Saga:

The North American Women trilogy:

-Sweet Savage Eden
-A Pirate's Pleasure
-Love Not a Rebel

The Cameron Civil War trilogy:

-One Wore Blue
-And One Wore Gray
-And One Rode West

Infumable.

I really enjoyed this one-- it's made it onto my favorites shelf and the hero made it into my Harem of Men :) hehe

There is something automatically sexy about a male doctor, then throw in the wealthy southern background amid the war and his rank as an officer and he is romantic and dreamy! That is Jesse Cameron! I loved him-- he made the book great. I loved how he stuck with his beliefs by staying in the Union army when the Civil War broke out. He didn't resign and join the Confederacy when Virginia seceded. Jesse believed that for their country to survive, the union needed to stay together- so he fought on the side of the Yankees and against his own brother.

Kiernan got on my nerves sometimes. She seemed so childish. She was clearly in love with Jesse and admitted it, but refused to marry him because he was a Yankee. Her hatred of Yankees ran deep with no clear explanation as to why she hated them so much. The only being that they invaded her land, took over her house, and killed her husband-- but this was after the war started and her hatred began before these events occurred. I suppose it was implied she hated Yankees for taking away the Southern Plantation life she was used to by the North's wish to end slavery. But then later on, she comes to realize that Blue or Gray-- a man was still a man underneath. It should've been with that realization that she knew she could marry Jesse, the man beneath the blue union. But!--- she still refuses to marry him because he's a Yankee! She got frustrating and I totally sympathized with the hero's frustration.

I loved the scene when he finally got Kiernan to confess that she loves him. He'd been shot and fell to the ground. She believed him dying and then finally admitted that she loved him and always had, always will. He teases her and then she notices that he's not mortally wounded and dying, but that the bullet had only grazed his arm.

Definitely recommend if you're into Civil War romances!

So, uh... a pro-slavery heroine, eh? That's... bold.

It was hard for me to enjoy this book due to the heroine's willful ignorance and unchecked privilege. I've read books set in the South during the Civil War, but in almost every instance, the main characters are like, "Yeah, slavery is bad, but states' rights!" Not here, guys. She hates Uncle Tom's Cabin because it got Northerners riled up about slavery, and you guys, it's not even fair! It's not a balanced portrayal! Not all slaveowners are mean to their slaves! In fact, her dead husband freed his slaves in his will and the ex-slaves stayed on as paid servants because they loved them so much!

I just... Yes, some slaveowners were kind to their slaves; and yes, some slaves and masters had good, even loving, relationships with each other; and yes, after the slaves were freed, many of them chose to stay behind because due to lack of education, lack of money, rampant racism, etc., they knew that they wouldn't be able to do better elsewhere.

And yes, naive but well-intentioned rich kids did exist in the 1860s.

But...seriously? This is our heroine? This is our narrative?

An entertaining read.

I might have enjoyed the historical details a little bit more than the romance since that was a bit typical.

I have read a few Civil war fiction before, but I might have forgotten the details, because I think I learned a few new things about it.

The two main characters were very typical but well written, although that strong and independent and a little spoiled southern heroine has been done before, Kiernan comes off as a bit annoying to me at times, I found myself thinking at one point "sorry but your no Scarlett".

Unfortunately for the book I have read another one with a the main character as a doctor during the civil war, one that gave lots more details on the subject.

I feel like I'm being a bit harsh since I did enjoy reading it, and I actually want to read the other two in the series.

A bit of a warning though for those NOT interested in the history, there is lots of it.

Kiernan was silly, extremely immature, completely UNLIKEABLE!! Jesse should have rode out of her life and kept on going. Basically Kiernan chose to be overly prideful and ridiculous while Jesse had to swallow her hateful words and actions repeatedly while constantly helping and protecting her foolishness because he loved her so much. She could treat him like dirt under her shoe for the ENTIRE book but he’d still love her to death and take it and justify it. Kiernan was awful, couldn’t stand her, and she was a traitor to Jesse when all her ever did was protect her. Even Anthony’s brother and sister (he dead husband’s siblings) came around, but not Kiernan because she was a headstrong idiot. Jesse deserved someone better.

A ver qué tal Daniel, my child.

Being ten years younger then Jesse Cameron, Kiernan had to wait to grow up until she caught his eye - but watch out when he returns on leave and gets one look at her - she is the woman for him for life. That said, things are heating up between the North and the South and Keirnan's southern sympathies are no big secret and she's none too happy when Jesse stays with the Union Army. She marries on the rebound, is promptly widowed (this is revealed in the first few pages) and vows to hate Jesse forever - but will that ole' treacherous body betray her when the Union soldiers (including Jesse)come marching up to her doorstep?

This is a quick, easy read and perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon when you're in the mood for something lighter. While Jesse and Kiernan have plenty of ups and downs in their relationships (and plenty of making up), I wouldn't classify it as a Big Misunderstanding. There is a fair amount of sex in the book (occasionally on the cheesy side), so definitely not recommended for the younger readers, and I'd also caution potential readers that while this is a romance, the author does include a lot of history in this, with some details of politics and discussion of major battles. I'm a history geek and love that stuff, but from reading some of the other reviews there are those who don't care for that, and if so perhaps this book might not suit your tastes - to each their own, as long as you're reading. This is the first in a trilogy, the other two being And One Wore Gray, And One Rode West.
