This book made me laugh so hard! It wasn't supposed to, but I couldn't help it.

Out of the Night is the first book in Robin T. Popp's Night Slayer series. Lanie Webber, the daughter of a famous biochemist needs to travel to the South American jungle to identify her father's body. It seems while studying a strange new animal species for the military, he was attacked and killed. Lanie has arranged to take a private charter flight with pilot Mac Knight. When Mac and Lanie arrive in the jungle they discover a strange creature which attacks Knight and nearly kills him. Thanks to Lanie's quick thinking she is able to save his life. But Lanie's father's body is missing and there is something strange going on.
Out of the Night was a fantastic read! I have to admit, I wasn't looking forward to reading another vampire book, but Out of the Night really took me by surprise. I think one of the reasons for this were the characters Mac and Lanie. They both were very down to earth, normal individuals. Even though the situation they faced seemed like something out of a horror movie, they themselves acted with an ordinary or standard reaction. There was a reality to their personalities that helped ground the story and not make it so fanciful.
Lanie is an average woman who works in a library. She is a volunteer fire-fighter/paramedic on the side. She is not out kicking butts in this book. She is much more likely to think up a clever plan before taking any kind of action, but when in a tough situation she keeps cool and can do the impossible. I am such a sucker for this type of heroine. Mac is no slouch either. A former captain in the Navy SEALs, his confidence and masculinity are the cornerstone of his personality. He holds himself to a strict moral code that he sometimes struggles with. I felt this only added depth to his character.
I love, love, love the way the vampire legend played out in this story. It is unique to most of the vampire books out there and it feels plausible. I could almost believe that this situation could happen in our world. The setting and atmosphere that Ms. Popp created was down right spooky, to say the least. At the beginning of the story, when it took place in the jungle, I would have jumped sky high if someone would have come up behind me while I was reading and tapped me on the shoulder. Luckily that didn't happen, but it was definitely tense reading for a while.

Robin scrive abbastanza bene. Purtroppo la trama è soprattutto d’azione e mistero. Il rosa è appena accennato e mentre giungo al 23% del libro mi rendo conto che ormai avrebbe già dovuto stupirmi. Cosa che non fa. Brava l’autrice, sbagliata per me la trama.

Thought it was really good, really liked how they showed vampire in a different light where other take more ethical approaches to obtaining blood. Good romance too!

Es raro que yo lea libros muy, muy desconocidos. Y la razón es simple: No confío. Algo que me aterra de tener que elegir libros es que siempre busco unos que me aporten enormes horas de diversión y a la vez me dejen algo para el futuro, alguna enseñando o similar. Pero esta vez pequé. Decidí salir un poco de mi burbuja de perfección literaria para leer algo que compré hace ya como dos años (porque estaba en descuento; libros en descuento = el cielo) pero que apenas hasta ahora me atreví a leer. Y el resultado fue muy diferente al que me esperaba, debo admitir.
Lanie es esta muy sensual bibliotecaria que por cosas de la vida se ve envuelta en una expedición salvaje (salvaje porque se da en la selva) junto a Mac, que es un muy sensual piloto veterano. Aunque ambos iniciaron con el pie izquierdo la misión conjunta que tenían, el tiempo y los macabros sucesos que les rodearán les acercarán para enfrentarse a un peligro y un destino que jamás imaginaron tendrían enfrentarían.
Lo cuento así de forma tan abstracta porque revelar más detalles sería una especie de catástrofe para todo aquel que tenga la oportunidad de leer el libro.
La historia es un poco simplona, lo acepto. Pero la autora agrega un par de detalles un tanto exóticos que logra generar el interés suficiente como para queramos invertir un par de horas en su historia. Desafortunadamente los giros en la trama no son tan contundentes y sorpresivos como se esperaría. Quizá sea porque es un libro de hace ya 10 años; periodo en donde muchas otras historias más actuales han hecho uso de los recursos narrativos que hace una década hubieran resultado efectivos, pero que hoy se sienten desgastados y predecibles.
Aparte de todo, los personajes son sólidos y carismáticos. Cada uno de ellos logra cautivarnos de una u otra forma. En especial los dos protagonistas, que poseen entre sí una química indiscutible.
El único lunar que le puedo encontrar al libro es que pudo haber aspirado a más. La historia cumple lo que promete, y es entretenida debido a un ritmo que nunca decae y unos diálogos inteligentes, pero a la vez es imposible sentir un “Quizá pudo haber llegado más alto” que nos puede dar un cierto aire de nostalgia o tristeza al ver una oportunidad literaria tan desaprovechada. Aunque se supone que este es el inicio de una serie de libros, entonces probablemente en las posteriores entregas la historia expanda sus alas un poco más para llegar un par de metros más arriba. Eso sí, aplauso a Robin por habernos dado un inicio de una serie que perfectamente funciona como libro autoconclusivo.
Más allá de la noche no es un libro que deje muchas lecciones y/o frases bonitas dignas de publicarse en redes sociales (más allá del hermoso poema que encontramos antes de que la historia inicie, click aquí para leerlo). Pero sí nos brinda una historia que entretiene, se lee de manera ágil, y logra sacarnos un par de risas. Si eres de los que lo tienen, por algún raro giro de la vida, no dudes en leerlo, al menos de a poquitos cada noche después de un largo día de trabajo o estudio.

Racconta la storia di Lanie Weber,giovane bibliotecaria e al tempo stesso vigile del fuoco che viene richiamata in Amazzonia per via della morte del padre biochimico. La accompagna Mac Knight,pilota e ex Seal. Una volta arrivati ,scoprono un laboratorio pieno di cadaveri dissanguati e non si trova il corpo del padre di lei. Quello che sembrava un incubo diventa realtà e Mac viene attaccato e morso. Tutto inizierà a cambiare. Lanie scopre che il padre non è morto ma si è solo trasformato in qualcosa di diverso insieme ad un ex collega cattivo di Mac. Il ritorno a casa non è privo di pericoli. C’è un piano per uccidere il presidente,Mac inizierà a trasformarsi e andranno incontro a una serie di avventure che li spingeranno sempre più vicini. Insieme a Mac anche l’amico Dirk lo seguirà in questo nuovo mondo dove c’è una sorta di alleanza che dà la caccia ai vampiri. Innanzitutto volevo fare una critica al titolo. Con la storia non c’entra niente,ma ormai non mi stupisco più. Nell’insieme è una buona storia,con una scrittura incisiva,semplice ed un ritmo veramente serrato. A tratti tiene con fiato sospeso. Più che un libro d’amore sembra uno d’avventura. Azione quasi in ogni pagina,con scontri,intrighi e macchinazioni. Tanti morti,pochissimo approfondimento psicologico,buon numero di personaggi secondari che riescono a sostenere l’impianto della storia e una nuova mitologia per l’origine dei vampiri,più originale di quella degli extraterresti. Qui si scopre derivino dal morso di un chupacapra (già di per sé un mito).In pratica un mito nell’altro. Solo che le persone morse dai chupacapra mantengono il controllo,quelle morse da altri vampiri no. La storia d’amore rimane un po’ ai margini,ma la prima a perdersi è Lanie che si sente in colpa per essere la causa della trasformazione di Mac. E sarà lei a sacrificarsi donando il suo sangue a Mac che ne avrà bisogno per affrontare Burton.l’ex collega fuori di testa e vampiro dichiarato. Il padre farà la sua comparsa per aiutarli cercando di creare un vaccino che non funzionerà e dopo un matrimonio in sordina vedremo i due protagonisti crescere Meg,un cucciolo di chupacapra(questa poi è davvero assurda). Tre stelline.

Lanie never thought the trip into the jungle to identify her dead father’s body would change her life forever. Upon arrival in the small scientific outreach, sexy but frustrating soldier turned pilot Mac in tow, they are greeted by the dead bodies of all security personnel and scientists but shockingly, her father is nowhere to be found. Then they find a strange statue someone has locked up in a cage. Upon opening the cage, despite Mac’s protest, they are attacked by a creature of unknown origin. Mac nearly dies in the ordeal and without Lanie’s medical experience, he would have. Unfortunately, Mac did not come out of the fight unscathed.
Mac doesn’t believe is vampires or chupacabra’s any of that nonsense. Until he witnessed the dead walking, thirsting for blood and Mac himself under going some startling changes. And it doesn’t stop once they get back to America. The monsters have followed and Mac’s own struggles to understand what he’s become is harder and harder to control.
But with Lanie’s brains and Mac’s newly found strength they must find a way to stop the monsters from killing the president and turning everyone into vampires.
Okay, I know how the plot sounds like. B, possible C movie vibes. And it did kind of venture into an action/ monster movie from the 80’s but it honestly wasn’t that bad. Yes, Lanie was an idiot a lot of the time because she had dumb blonde moments despite being a scientistic daughter and a fire fighter. She was the one who got Mac attacked in the first place and he told her as such in an argument. Yes, Mac was rude to Lanie until he realized how hot she was… eww. But it was a fun story. A bit repetitive at times and the classic romance blooming under pressure situations which is unlikely to last. But it was a fairly well written book and I didn’t hate it.

Sono stata incerta se dare tre o quattro stelline (pensate un po' che dilemma) perchè in realtà, a mio parere, sarebbero proprio tre stelline e mezza giuste giuste. Siccome però a scuola detestavo quel maledetto mezzo voto (seiemmezzo!!) che poi sulla pagella andava sempre a perdere il mezzo, ho optato per le quattro e via.
Questo romanzo ha un grosso pregio e un grosso difetto.
Il pregio è sicuramente l'originalità della trovata con cui l'autrice spiega l'origine dei vampiri. Non voglio spoilerare perché sarebbe davvero un peccato far perdere la sorpresa con un'umile pseudorecensione come questa. La trovata è così intrigante che mi ha subito catturata. Inoltre, chi è anche solo un po' interessato ai "misteri", sono sicura apprezzerà anche di più questa idea.
Questa originalità è sviluppata in una vicenda ben raccontata, che riesce a mantenere la suspense, anche se non da cardiopalma, che si legge bene e permette di arrivare alla fine senza troppo storcere il naso.
E infatti qui arriviamo al punto dolens, secondo me, il grosso difetto: la caratterizzazione dei personaggi. I protagonisti, primari e secondari, sono piuttosto insulsi. Se li sostituissimo con altri, la vicenda resterebbe la stessa, e questo è grave, perché a rigor di logica, e nella letteratura migliore, è proprio la psicologia di un personaggio che fa muovere la vicenda. Storia e personaggi non sono due elementi separati, ma intrinsecamente collegati e inseparabili.
Le reazioni, i pensieri dei nostri "heroes" della situazione mi sono parsi spesso superficiali e inadeguati.
Questo basterebbe a renderlo un brutto romanzo, e invece no. E' un romanzo discreto, reso più intrigante dall'idea che lo muove, nonostante i personaggi, che non rimpiangerò.

Una storia molto gradevole anche se non particolarmente emozionante =D Ho apprezzato molto l'idea dell' origine dei vampiri che dà l'autrice, molto originale e io ne ho letti tanti sul genere =D Il punto debole del romanzo è senza dubbio il rapporto tra i due protagonisti, molto poco passion XD un pò per la paura di entrambi sulle conseguenze della trasformazione del protagonista e un pò per il rapido succedersi degli eventi che lasciano ben poco spazio allo sviluppo di una convincente storia d'amore =) finale abbastanza scontato con l'eroina che nel tentativo di mostrarsi indipendente fa il solito casino costringendo l'eroe a venirla a salvare XD Consigliato per qualche ora di relax, leggerò sicuramente il seguito =)

i really love all of her night slayer books. this one didnt disappoint that is for sure. With the chupcabra( i guess on how to spell that) the infant and adult and how they are different. and how they create vampires and vampires and half human is so interesting. and how the vampires and half humans become night slayers is so cool. i just wish she would write more of them i guess she is writing the immortals series. but i love this one sooo much. excellent. i thought.

September 14, 2008It's ok..The plot has substance but the creation and variances of the different types of vamps is a little confusing. I generally like the more "humanistic" type vamps so them being created by a gargoyle type creature that comes to life at night is a little far fetched. The romance is pretty good, not too blatant and gooey.

Eh - I was left a little lukewarm about this book. It is quite an action book first I believe, with some paranormal and romance thrown in. It just didn't grab my attention compared to all the other good romance/paranormal/erotica stories out there.
