Barbara's father was a sadistic man at the best of times - his idea of fun was to kill the family dog by tying it to the back of his car and driving off. Also for kicks, he took his children out on to the lake and held them under until they were gasping for their lives. He sexually assaulted Barbara from a young age, often when the rest of the family were in the house. He repeatedly threatened to kill her, and made two very serious attempts. During the final attempt, as he was raping and choking her, Barbara made a vow - if she survived, she would come forward and get justice against her father ..."Without Hope" is a powerful and inspiring true story of a girl who finally found the inner strength to escape her brutal childhood.
This book has thought me alot. At first when I picked it up I thought it would be misery but luckily I just couldn't put it down. It was very positive and it teaches one what is out there. I also found myself in fits of laughter reading the middle chapters. There is alot of humour in it. That was great to read someone turning experience around to something more positive rather than misery.
She described her ordeal in an easy enough way, but there was some paragraph and sentence repeating going on in this book. However I don't rate these books by how well they are written or give them good ratings just becuase I feel for the person sharing their story. I simply rate them by how much I was drawn into the recounting of their ordeal.Like all other books of this genre it leaves you with lots of questions about the world we live in and how someone can be so removed from God as to inflict such suffering on their own child without a hint of genuine remorse.
What a horrible experience for this little girl, I found myself getting bored within the first half of this book because it was repetitive in some areas and too detail. Overall this girl shows great strength both within the book and to put it onto paper.. Overall.. 3/5
