Don’t Fall Asleep by Laura Eno is part of the Dream Assassin series starring Cassandra Dade.
From the cover: "In the 27th century, a psychic aberration has manifested in humanity, gifting a select few with the ability to weave dreams for others. They apply their addictive trade, calling themselves Dream Merchants. Rarer still are those who can assassinate people while they dream…"
In Don’t Fall Asleep, Cassandra has recently arrived on Altair IV. She is one of the dream assassins and she works and lives by her own code of ethics. She’s also rich, beautiful and running from her past. She decides to seek out a partner, one she can train and trust. In her line of work, she’ll need someone who has her back and will “stand between her and mental destruction.”
Altair IV is not a pretty planet. The common people live in horrible conditions in the underworld and buy dreams like drugs. The rich live above ground in their lofty bubbles and tourists visit the domes in-between.
Cassandra chooses Nathan, but he, like her, has secrets. She teaches him to assassinate without being detected. He teaches her to let loose and smile. The question is will either of them survive when they go after one of the most corrupted men on Altair IV.
There’s a lot of action in this book, as well as quiet moments of introspection. Neither Cassandra nor Nathan is portrayed as a super hero incapable of being hurt. Both have their demons to conquer, but they realize they have a better chance of surviving if they stick together.
Don’t Fall Asleep by Laura Eno is the first book in the Dream Assassin series, but it’s not the first book I’ve read by Laura Eno. Once again, she has not disappointed.
This book was sent to me by the author, but that did not influence my review.
Cassandra Dade is a Dream Merchant who has been trained as a Dream Assassin, a skill so rare that it had become almost mythical. She is a highly skilled but tormented woman, who leaves Earth to start a new life on planet Altair IV, where she'll find a partner and friend, and also a part of her past she'd rather have left behind.
Don't Fall Asleep is an action-packed book in which Cassandra is a hunter who soon finds that she is being hunted as well. While her relationship with Nathan -- her newly found partner -- develops into a warm friendship, the author introduces us to a world where the deepest and dirtiest wholes are far more interesting than the high domes where the ruler class live a sheltered and dull life.
The dream waving concept, as well as the description of the dreams the characters enter, are the highlights of this book. I have always been curious to learn how is the working of other people's minds, and dreams seem to be a good window to understand it. Laura portrays the characters' personality very well through their unconscious minds.
The action in the book is slowed down by the frequent strolls Cassandra and Nathan make together. While they are entertaining, the get a bit exasperating as the book reaches to its climax. To the contrary, the traumatized Cassandra seems rather quick in inviting her future partner to her highly secured (and amazing) house.
All in all, Don't Fall Asleep is a pleasant reading that ends tipping up what's coming up in the next book. I sure want to know how Cassandra and Nathan will defeat the hidden villain, but I confess I'm even more curious to learn more about Artie.
This is a science fiction novel. At first I thought it was written from a YA group but the content is a bit graphic for that. I'm not much of a science fiction/fantasy reader myself so I can't compare it to other books of the same genre.
It's set in the future and not on planet earth. Eno does not describe the planet and its race in much detail: They live in domes and the inhabitants look the same as humans on earth. The main characters come from earth. I didn't mind this because I'm more of a character/plot reader.
What you may like about the book: (a)It's got a similar theme to the newly released film Inception. If you like the concept of entering dreams, you may like this book. I think we will be seeing more and more books along this line and she's one of the first authors (to my knowledge) to write a trilogy about it. (b) Both of the characters are good-looking and for some readers it's important. (c) I really loved the background of the female main character. I only wished the author had discussed it more. Perhaps she will as the trilogy continues.
What you may not like: (a)The author spends a lot of time going on walks and exploring the planet. I found that these walks did not advance the plot and I wanted her to get back to the dreams. (b) Also, I wished the author had a stronger plotline. I didn't know what the MC's were striving for sometimes. I know one of the main characters was in training but I didn't feel the plot propelled me enough to keep reading.
Eno has priced the ebook low so I add it to your collection.
Read the Kindle sample. I like the Matrix/Inception-like concept of dream assassins although didn't see enough of the characters to get hooked. We'll see :-)
