I'm biased in that I read Gene Hill's column in Field and Stream magazine way back in the 60s & 70s. He writes from the heart on outdoor subjects in an easy-going and many times humorous style. He speaks of a less stressful time when we weren't so competitive and when many hunters/fisherman went out for the quietness of the outdoors as well as the sport. Even today, it's not so important that I catch a fish as that I've enjoyed my time outdoors. My two favorite stories were "A Listening Walk" & "The Responsible Sportsman". As always the "Annual Reports" are a stitch.
He was part of a fraternity of outdoor writers who took pride in their writing skills. Besides being able to write about shooting with remarkable insight he was a crack shot to boot! I sorely miss him, O'Connor, Page, Waterman, Smith, McIntosh and Keith.
