Conqueror Vanquished

Rate this book
In 52 B.C., Rome has just conquered Gaul…

Leonidas Danae Vorenus, commander of Rome’s prestigious Sixth legion, is ordered to establish a strategic outpost in Gaul after its surrender to Julius Caesar. But on the way to his new post, Leonidas is seriously wounded in an ambush. Only one person can save his life, and she’s his sworn enemy.

Solange is a healer. She values every life, even if it belongs to one of the hated Romans who’ve just conquered her land. Bound by her duty and her new position as a subject of Rome, she is obliged to tend Leonidas in his tent.

But the relationship between conqueror and conquered soon evolves into much more. Their forced intimacy ignites an unexpected attraction, and prompts the two enemies to look beyond the reason for their hatred to explore the powerful erotic feelings simmering underneath.

When a sudden crisis means they must each choose between loyalty and love, can a career warrior truly find happiness with a woman of peace?

Dodie's Review

Leonidas is an ideal hero. He seems by turns a fierce fighter, tough as nails, loyalty inspiring leader and a kind, insightful, sensitive man. He treats not only the soldiers under his command with respect and sensitivity, but also the people of Gaul whom he has captured. Solange is an experienced healer; dedicated to her craft. She has had a hard life in Gaul, and has bad experiences with previous conquerors in her village. Nevertheless, when Leonidas turns up in her village with a mortal wound, she treats him and tries to save his life.

It would be easy to say that Leonidas was one way in the privacy of his tent when Solange was treating him, and another with his men, but it you look closely, you can see that the same characteristics that make him a good leader, make him a good match for Solange.

I enjoyed the journey with Leonidas and Solange. If you like strong characters working to find their balance, this is the story for you.

I loved this book. Not only the conqueror hero (who turns out to be a very fair and noble man) and the conquered heroine Solange (who fights unsuccessfully against the seduction of her enemy) but also the incredible attention to historical detail in 52 BC Gaul (France). I really could visualize everything in the book!

I really like Leigh Court, and I liked this story, even tho she's written mainly Victorian romances up to now. Vorenus is a powerful Roman commander who is sweetly won over by the kindness of his conquered enemy, Solange. Highly recommended!
