This novel suffers in ratings due to being bl and also having some coercion at the beginning. I went into this novel knowing these two facts, and being able to accept them in a fictional, mildly smutty novel, and I thoroughly loved the story.
I love the power plays and character development in this story. Both characters have problems - one has no empathy and an obsessive love, the other feels that he has to always hide himself. However, they also each have their own benefits - one is able to take chances on what he wants and the other has a deep desire to improve his country. The characters actually balance each other out really well, and do help each other grow so that they can eventually have a healthy relationship.
There were definitely parts of this story where it felt like the couple was self destructing, but everything work out for the best in the end. I think the thing to keep in mind is that this is a story, where anything can happen and characters can connivingly predict the most improbable twists. In real life, this couple would probably have actually sabotaged each other to death. But in this story, their plans work out and they're able to outwit their planned future in favor of one where all their dreams come true.
This is definitely a story of a gong who is obsessed and is willing to scheme and do a lot of dubious shit to possess the shou he claims to love. All that being said, there was more political scheming and betrayal than actual dark themes, in my opinion. I think this is the first historical danmei I read where every single one of the 7 royal siblings were actively scheming against each other for the throne. It was a lot to keep track of but also kind of refreshing and interesting to see how it all played out. Usually if there's a sibling fight for the throne there's only two or three major factions with different nobles backing them but in this one, every prince had their own schemes. There were some parts that dragged a bit and the ending especially seemed to wrap up but there were still ten chapters left which dragged out For the most part I enjoyed it but I was also left wanting a bit more.
